The Technics Turntable Fan Club - Questions, Advice, Discussion

Good deal on the Tech mat — have the older versions on my older Techs without the rubberized platter. Is there a good NOS source or you went used?

The Technics Turntable Fan Club - Questions, Advice, Discussion

Forgot those ATs are kinda short. I do think they’re a bit of a “low rider” (a la War lol) compared to some MMs with a long protruding cantilever. I second the taller mat idea. Been meaning to get one myself for my GR, keep waffling on what I want though. It’s beyond me why they cheaped out with...

The Technics Turntable Fan Club - Questions, Advice, Discussion

Do you have an acrylic vta/azimuth block? Agree it looks like it’s riding a bit tail down, the block will help sort it out better than a photo (lens distortion is likely to screw with a photo a bit). Alternatively you can start with the manual reco based on cart height.

Phono Cartridges - Your favorites and least favorites?

On the G? That’s surprising. Maybe they can send you one since they stock the part on the Panny website, I think it’s around $15. Of course a protractor set to the same parameters will do the same thing.

Targeting Technics alignment with a 52mm distance from stylus point to washer, so I use the OEM plastic gauge and a #11 xacto blade as a straight edge against it. It may be hard to tell from the photos but the AT-LH11H has two sets of fixed holes instead of traditional slots. This locks the cart...

Phono Cartridges - Your favorites and least favorites?

I've been really boring with carts recently — in fact today I took delivery of another AT-VM95ML. I got the whole cart this time and mounted it up just to switch it up. This is my 6th-ish stylus for this cart in the last 4-ish years, I find they last around 700hr at which point they start to...

    Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Well AP’s mono Pet Sound is now at $75. They like to do that, jack up the prices when it’s “out of production”. Never picked one up myself so I’d be happy to see if VMP really did something special for it for $40.

    Their most cohesive imo.

    Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Didn't want to get this but was pulled in by the artwork, and I'll say it's a really amazing package on this. My record is silent and nearly flat although it does have a tiny minuscule "lip warp" that doesn't really cause cart quaking, so considering the heat wave I'm going to let it slide...

    Vinyl Me Please Country

Yikes, my copy was pretty flat. Not totally silent but the tiny bit of noise was not prolonged enough to make a case for CS. Like many I really love this era of Waylon, partially this one. IDGAF ifs this is the "basic" Waylon record to like, I think it's the peak of his 70s output. That said...

    Definitive Audiophile pressings

Shit that was the slowest corporate apology I’ve ever seen. These guys really make VMP look like PR masters.

How much does record eccentricity matter?

IMO Nakamichi was on the right track, with warps and cleaning largely under control eccentricity is probably the biggest impedance to proper playback of a pressed record. Still in real life scenarios I think it’s completely down to individual sensitivity, so probably hard to quantify. Some seem...

The Technics Turntable Fan Club - Questions, Advice, Discussion

With this talk about comparing the G to more expensive tables I’m sensing an SL-1000R in your future 😂 Joking aside, glad you’re enjoying the G. That would be an ultimate goal table for me if I ever have the money to spend. Pretty goofy conservation going on the mastering engineer’s forum a few...

    Vinyl Me Please Essentials

That’s true, it’s not an easy album to find in the wild, but it’s not a case like the Jorge Ben album they had cut digitally by Kevin a few years ago that was much more scare. Honestly I hopped back on for 3 months as the entire roster across tracks was interesting enough but I’ll likely pass on...

    Vinyl Me Please Essentials

I think it’s just the price factor for me. Sure Kevin’s cut some great records from files, no doubt about it, but for damn near $50 after taxes it gives me pause on a pretty common record. For that cost, you could easily get a NM Vertigo OG (likely quieter than a GZ frisbee) and still have money...

    Vinyl Me Please Essentials

So is this Jailbreak AAA or not? Guessing not but they got Kevin to cut it to soften the blow? Crazy how they’re so coy with all these details still after all the years of us bugging them.

    Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Same here, I thought they were cheesy radio dad-rock. Instead TL is now one of the only classic rock bands I’m not burnt out on. Jailbreak is perhaps slightly marred by the overplaying of “Boys” but it doesn’t diminish the album, and the song in context is enjoyable. I really am hoping for a...

    Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Right, I’d hope for a proper AAA release cut by a top engineer from the master tape, heavy tip-on jacket etc. That’s the standard for dad-rock reissues ~$50, of course VMP makes a lot of compromises for stupid things like remixed art, colored vinyl etc on the Essentials track.

Phono Cartridges - Your favorites and least favorites?

Thanks for the tip, didn’t know if it would fit! Will be a tempting little accessory to get.

It does when running a stock counterweight only, but that’s the where the back-end aux weight comes into play. You can put the aux weight on to help counter heavy loads on the business end of the tonearm. Here’s what my tonearm looks like currently, headshell cart mass is around 18g, targeting...
