  • Power is on, at least temporarily, for the first time since early Monday morning. Still no water though.

Well, it was a glorious 5 hour run with power. I guess now I get to find out if I’m part of the rolling blackout team, or if it is just out again for an extended period.

Team Rolling Blackout, which is better than the other option.

Glad to do it. I've been looking forward to this episode tonight. I love watching vintage ACL performances, and this episode should feature some of those. I'm really liking how they've put together these compilation episodes for this current season during the pandemic.

Man, even though I've seen it many times, that Billy Joe Shaver performance of 'Live Forever' hits even harder following his passing. Also, next week is the re-airing of the Allen Toussaint episode, which will be another addition to the old DVR.
You may not think you need to watch all 6 of Shirley Manson's appearances on Craig Ferguson's show, but then you start watching and realize that you kinda do.
An hour long Best of Spoon episode of Austin City Limits premieres tomorrow evening. Check your local PBS station for airtimes.

Last time I saw Spoon was at the Masonic in SF. Halfway through their set the entire band left the stage save for Jim Eno on synth and Britt Daniel. The venue dropped all the lights to almost nil with a dim blue spotlight on Daniel, who proceeded to lie down motionless on stage while Eno noodle some atmospheric shit on the synth. This last for, I shit you not, over 15 minutes. Pure wankery
When I heard Molly Burch was going to go in more of a pop direction, I wasn’t sure exactly how that would sound. Turns out I actually like the new sonic direction.

Yeah, that’s the first taste of the new sound, I believe. Wasn’t sure how her vocal style would work with more of a straight up pop sound, but I thought it worked very well.

While happy for those that enjoy the new direction, It's definitely not my cup of tea. That said, I wish her well. That debut album was a real gem.

Man, The The's 'The Beat(en) Generation' hits even harder after last week.
Getting rejected for a job yesterday after surviving 3 rounds of interviews, spread across the last month, where I spoke with 8 different people has killed off any Christmas spirit I had left. Gonna have to fake it for a few days.
Excited to hear a new St. Vincent album is on the way in a few months. I know the last one was rather polarizing, but her description of the new one sounds like it might have broader appeal. Inspired by 70s Stevie Wonder and Sly & The Family Stone.

They air on PBS affiliates around the country, and I believe they also post them on the Austin City Limits website around the time they air. Not sure they leave them up indefinitely though. I think they leave them up for a few weeks at least.

Sometimes they also post some songs that don't make the final show on YouTube.
I thought the new Bee Gees doc on HBO was pretty good overall. I thought the pacing was great...up until the end where they pretty much jumped from the mid-80s to the passing of Andy, Maurice, and Robin. Could've used another 10-15 minutes to at least highlight the 90s and early 00s singles.

It was clear to me they had finished telling their story with the mid-eighties and tacked on the passing of the siblings because they realized they didn’t actually have an ending.

I just wanted them to cover some of the hits they had in those later years. Those weren't great albums, but they did have some hits, and covering that material would have only reinforced the overall themes of the group which have always been resilience & reinvention. They also could've covered some later covers of their songs that were also hits.

The glossing over of an artist's or group's later, less successful/more troublesome years, is always my biggest pet peeve of career spanning documentaries. One big exception off the top of my head is that Nina Simone doc. That was a pretty warts and all overview.
Man, Charlie Sexton really nailed the essence of Townes Van Zandt in "Blaze", particularly in those interview segments.
