5-10-15-20 (Your Music Through The Years)

Realized tonight that I’m almost eligible for an update to my list. I’m going to wait a few months, but I’ve got a good idea of what my selection for 50 is going to be. Anybody else due for an update to a previous post? Any newer members want to share their history?

Hard to believe the first quarter of 2024 is almost in the books. I think Waxahatchee is the leader in the clubhouse for me so far, but the year is still (kinda) early. St. Vincent is lurking on the horizon. My top 5 so far are probably all from female artists. J Mascis might sneak in there.

It’s not bad. I definitely enjoyed some of the songs. But there were some headscratchers for sure. Kudos to them for experimenting with things this far along into their career. Hopefully it is more of a grower for me. Admittedly, the initial post is after one listen.

This new JAMC album is….umm, not what I was expecting. I will give the Brothers Reid credit for trying some different things, but this one is kind of an odd listen.

This was always my favorite week of the year when I was younger. SXSW, Spring Break, St. Patrick’s Day, & the start of the NCAA Tournament. Two decades on, I avoid South By like the plague & they haven’t even started the tournament yet. Bah Humbug!

I didn’t love all of the songs on “Joy’all” the album, but the woman always puts on an entertaining live show. Great setlist for these shows. Here’s a playlist of the setlist minus a cover of Girls’ ‘Lust For Life’.

Can’t stop listening to it. It is the coolest thing she has put out in a bit. “Daddy’s Home” sounded so good on paper, and it wasn’t a bad record, but it was my least favorite of her releases. This feels like a melding of her David Byrne influence with that harder guitar edge that hasn’t been...

For every album release since “Strange Mercy”, I’ve been wanting a straight up rock album from her. Something that hints at the fury of those live Big Black and The Pop Group covers. This may be as close as I will get. We’ll see once it’s out. This song has a funkiness to it, but I bet it will...

Interesting tidbit…if you can find a copy of the 2 disc DVD of the movie/“documentary” “This Is Elvis”, they filmed the opening reenactment scene of Elvis’ death in the now very off limits upstairs section of Graceland. You don’t get to see a ton, but it’s one of the only ways you can see it...

I went last summer. It’s a trip. I can’t imagine working there, and having to do the same thing every day in THAT setting. I found Memphis to be more interesting than Nashville, but it seemed most of the people in Memphis I encountered didn’t think very highly of their own city.

First single from the forthcoming Wonder Women of Country album. The group consists of Kelly Willis, Melissa Carper & Brennen Leigh, a trio that has been touring together for a year or so. This Kelly fronted tune is a classic country weeper.
