Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Finally got my copy of Stevie Nicks and it is even better than expected!
The tip on jacket is gorgeous (although the image is not as high res as the original), and so is the vinyl color. SQ is fantastic as always, great job by RKS. This cost 5x more than the original press I got years ago, but I think its definitely worth it when you consider how much audiophile labels charge for high quality reissues.

I was thinking the same thing when I got my order. You would think it would be a priority. If I were an artist I wouldn’t want them sending out 25,000 copies of my record with a Lo res shot of the cover art. Insane.

even more strange was how they recalled Queen because the album title being too high and that’s not the VMP standard. But entire Lo-res covers in every sub are a-ok.

I find it weird that they can get the actual master tapes to use for remastering the album, but not some sort of "master photo" to use for the album covers. I don't know if the record label is just like "ok here you can use the tapes, and for the cover you can use this 400x400 jpg from an Angelfire page we made in 1999"

Based on the Blue Note Anthology fiasco, I think they just don't give a shit. They may not even ask the labels for the cover.

They certainly seem to use poor scans of damaged covers a lot. Not sure where they get them. They may just buy a decent used copy and use a crummy scanner. Can't even be bothered to do any color correcting or editing out simple cover wear.

Another reason why trying to price their products in line with companies like Analogue Productions is a joke.

Theres a history of this and I dont quite understand why. I have an OG pressing of Blossom Dearie and compared it with the VMP copy a while back. Its just awful what they did. The original is crisp and clear. The VMP copy is massively cropped, blurred, and with horrible levels.

Edit: Decided to dig them out

Ugh I knew it was bad but seeing it side-by-side like that... If I recall, the VMP version is based on some CD edition that was cropped up close like that.

Either way, it's pretty inexcusable. They've been able to go the extra mile for the sound quality of the records themselves, it is baffling how often the artwork just seems like an afterthought.

(btw I'm extremely jealous you have an OG Blossom)

Cropped out the Verve label, though not sure why that was necessary.
This was mentioned when I last posted but to remove that would literally take 10 seconds with the patch tool in photoshop. I would they have graphics people on board anyway so I doubt it is this to be honest.

Ahh now this makes sense.......but seriously why couldn't they just check it online. Craziness.

I got the OG just before VMP announced it and it was in the guess stages. Blossom had been mentioned and when I was in a local charity shop I saw it for a couple of quid and thought it without even hearing the music first. I had no idea that it was sought after until I got home. The same with happened with Queen Latifah. I found a copy at a car boot sale for a couple of quid and the next week it was announced as the R&HH release.

I think you are overestimating the effort they put towards touching up cover scans.

I'm sure there's more, that was a cursory glance through Classics.

I will say it does seem much more prevalent with Classics compared to, well anything else they put out. Experience Unlimited and its different color balance is the only non-Classics release I can think of that seemed “off.”

Even the latest Classics has problems. The color on Erroll Garner also is much darker than previous releases, losing a lot of detail.

To add to this list:

C002 - John Lee Hooker - The colors of the spine are completely different than the typical Impulse spine. Maybe the original was like this (can't find a reference image), but I find that hard to believe.

C008 - Max Roach - Has an "Inspected By..." stamp on the back cover.

Bella Donna showed up today. Some thoughts:

-been a hot minute since I've received a record where the inner sleeve is a good half inch bigger than the outer
-my copy almost looks like the mockup if I hold it right up to a light; otherwise, it's black
-the print insert is so worthless these days

shoddy package IMO, but I've always dug this album and it was easy to not swap it. also swapped classics for John Moreland and that looks great.

Going to be a little while on De Stijl.

Update on June Essentials
For our June Essentials release, we proudly partnered with Third Man Records to reissue De Stijl by Detroit rock duo, The White Stripes — highlighting the important connections between the band, the label, pressing plant & city.
Unfortunately, due to delays from COVID-19 restrictions, Third Man Pressing has not been able to operate at full capacity which has led to extended pressing timelines. As a result, this release will be delayed approximately 4 - 6 weeks.
We sincerely apologize for this delay and expect De Stijl to ship to members in July with your July ROTM. For the most recent updates, click & bookmark this page.
We’re so excited for you to hear this record. It’ll be worth the wait!
