Fresh Grabs

I need those Dan Mangan records, his last record was my favorite from 2018. Such an underrated songwriter that very few people know about.
He really is great. I've caught him a few times now, and always a great show. I love that voice, and really puts a strong, minimal sound with it. Rarely see these at any stores, so figured I should pick them up.

Recent acquisition of a limited signed press of Rome’s 2014 record “A Passage to Rhodesia”. It’s an excellent dark folk record. (Had to have it shipped in from Germany.)

I’m providing a link to a write up regarding the lyrical content as its subject matter can be easily misinterpreted due to its controversial nature

Rome’s records generally are concept records based around telling the human story of a single war.

So non essential retail reopened finally here on Monday. It was a lovely sunny day so I got the tram into town and popped in to my local record store to pick up the 4 they had on hold for me! Seemed like a normal day again for a change...

Lee Morgan - Sidewinder
McCoy Tyner - The Real McCoy
The Black Keys - Delta Kream

So happy to be back properly in my newly reopened local so grabbed these two three (I can't count - might be why i've got so many records). The Blue Notes sound amazing and are a rare occurrence of me buying records I already have (albeit just some old Deagostini pressings so felt I could do with an upgrade). And really enjoying The Black Keys for first time really since Brothers.

Some Ebay purchases from Mali, Benin and Congo - all crackers.

Lots of good stuff here a mix of PIFs, Local Record Store pick ups, and mail deliveries.

Lotsa grabs from the past two months... let’s start:

PJ Harvey and Cure are reissues, while Mogwai was an affordable used grab from my local. As for Postal Service, the $1 price tag is no mistake (the bonus disc is unplayable due to paint damage, but the actual album is only noisy at times).

Mandatory Tone Poet grab from the latest Target B2G1 sale. Also a couple of Bandcamp Friday grabs. All Them Witches and White Denim are directly attributable to forum recommendations.

Now on to more affordable stuff. Helloween is VG+ and thus a steal for under $10, as is everything else in this photo.

More used stuff. CODA is missing the cover but the record is pristine. Frankly, having the inner sleeve only encapsulates how I feel about this release; it’s an incomplete mess. Kraftwerk is a curious 1990s pressing that omits a couple of tracks from the original, not sure why.

Finally the really cheap grabs. Four great albums for $10 total. I’m ashamed to admit that the Kiss is easily my favorite of the bunch.

Somehow I forgot to share the biggest grab of them all from last month:

My local shop had a big price tag on it, which motivated me to trade in about a dozen records and 60+ CDs (which was more than enough; I still have store credit). I’m not sure I’ve ever heard a better recording.

Picked this up with an assist from @scotthilk and his bandcamp gift card generosity.
I grabbed something from Mathias, as well! These were two volumes posted for free online several years ago, and for the longest time I didn't know the tape was available on Mathias' Bandcamp since he wasn't really the main driver behind the project. Very glad to have a physical copy of some of the most interesting Canadian stuff I've heard in a long time.
