February 2021 Challenge (& Raffle)

Thurs 25 – Screaming banshee
Spin something by your favourite vocalist.

I tend to find perfection in the imperfect, and Mark Lanegan is one of absolute best. His gruff, smoky voice is sublime for rock and roll.

Screaming Trees didn't enjoy the success of most of their peers, but there wasn't a better band to come out of the Pacific NW in the late 80's.

"Lord please give me what I need
He said there's pain and misery"

What a line...

Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion

A perfect record from the Seattle explosion...

Not usually in anyone's favorite LZ albums, this reissue is worth getting for the 2 LP's of "Companion Audio". For some reason they waited until this release to include the B-Side "Hey, Hey, What Can I Do". Being the B-side to ""Immigrant Song", most people were expecting it on the reissue of III.

I love that reissue, and Baby Come on Home is a gem!

Sun 21 – Wow me!

Calexico/Iron & Wine - In the Reins

Maybe not my coolest piece of music memorabilia, but my most recent, anyway. One of the last shows I saw before lockdown last year was Calexico and Iron & Wine on Superbowl Sunday, promoting their second collaborative album, Years to Burn. My partner and I are both huge fans -- in fact, one of the first things we ever bonded over -- and we got to the venue early and were lucky enough to get front row. I'd never been that close before, and certainly not for one of my favourite bands. We had an amazing night singing along to every song and lucked out when I was able to flag down a roadie after the encore and asked for one of the setlists. Afterward I saw Joey Burns of Calexico at the merch table and he signed it for us. Soon I'd like to get this framed.

Mon 22 – I can’t wait

My Morning Jacket - The Waterfall II

MMJ is my answer and it's not particularly close. Not only have I only seen them once, opening for Wilco and Dylan in 2013, so I would love to see them headline, but this album came out as a nice surprise last summer and became one of my main summer quarantine jams I'd listen to on my deck and get stoned and just space out to. So as weird and shitty a year as it was last year, I have good memories associated with this record. I'm sure I'm also going to want to travel again as soon as it's safe, and I'd kill to see them at Red Rocks or an outdoor summer festival somewhere.

Neko Case - Middle Cyclone

I still refuse to pick favorites, but Neko Case can sing. After seeing her with the New Pornos last February (the last concert I saw), I now have it as a priority to catch one of her shows as a solo artist, too.

Tues 23 – Quartet

Mastodon - Crack the Skye

I believe I was scooped on London Calling, so I'll play my favourite metal album of all time. Mastodon is doubly cool because apart from a short-lived singer they never recorded with, the same four dudes have been in the band for 20+ years now. Pretty rare accomplishment.

I almost picked this one, too.

I do recommend finding the 2x45 pressing...or hope they reissue it at some point. It's really good.
