December 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge: The Intergalactic Mixtape Dance-Off!

Day 2 – Go All The Way
It feels so right (Feels so right). Being with you here tonight. - I've got the power...pop
PXL_20221203_130054731.jpg

The New Pornographers "Mass Romantic" - as per Wikipedia they are a power pop group so I'm running with it because this album is flawless top to bottom! I'd keep the energy going with "To Wild Homes" but anything off this would work!!

Day 3 – Spirit In The Sky
Oh set me up with the spirit in the sky (spirit in the sky) - the new gods the old gods everyone come in grab an instrument and let's jam!
PXL_20221203_130434220.jpg

The Power of Zeus - The Gospel According to Zeus - the power of Zeus compels you! The power of Zeus compels you! Looks like we're slowing things down and hitting you with some fuzzy psychedelic rock with a message, a message from Zeus...I'd have to go with "The Sorcerer of Isis (The Ritual of The Mole)" obviously...

Day 3 – Spirit In The Sky
Oh set me up with the spirit in the sky (spirit in the sky).
Play some gospel music or an album with a religious or spiritual theme.

Jars Of Clay - Jars Of Clay
Song: “Flood”

First time I’m playing a CD for a challenge (the vinyl is going for almost $500 last time I checked). Lots of church kids were fans of DC Talk’s Jesus Freak, but in my opinion, Jars of Clay’s self titled album blew them out of the water.

Nice! 20/20 on vinyl! "Cheri" is one of my favorite power pop tracks.
Yeah, saw a deal on it a while back and grabbed it. Feel the need to have a few of the classics. Picked up the Any Trouble record too, that one's fantastic.

Just saw this one performed last night!

John Lennon "Plastic Ono Band" (1970 Apple Records; 1977 Japanese reissue)
John sings about several different personal themes on this, including the place of God in the world (on "God"). Third track on a mix, I like to sometimes take a turn and surprise a little. Maybe a deep cut, maybe a complete shift in style. Keep the listener guessing so they can't anticipate the rest of the mix. But it still has to flow. Not sure if "God" is precisely what I would put next from this mixtape. But maybe. Either I slow it down and go with "God" or add some chaos and go with "Well Well Well". Either way, it flows well from Sloan's Beatles influences of the last track.

I will tell ya what, I have 3 authentic “praise the lord” style Gospel albums and I have a strange relationship with them. I rarely listen to them, to the point that I consider purging them from my collection occasionally but then when I actually spin one I am always blown away by the music and start to think that maybe I need to add more Gospel records. Sister Rosetta is no exception, such a power house!

Day 1 - Hooked On A Feeling
Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga.
Play a record with a song that you feel is a great mixtape/playlist opening track.

BREAK ON THROUGH!

The Doors - S/T

This song would also work as the last track on side A of a mixtape: Break on through to the other side!

Play some Power Pop

Sloan "One Chord To Another" (1996 Murderecords; 2016 reissue)
As @imtheocean says, track 2 is key for keeping the energy and vibe going. So I'm going with the horn-driven power pop of "Everything You've Done Wrong". The hooks on this are timeless.

I immediately thought of Sloan, scooped on my first choice but, I got more Sloan!

Been a LONG time since I went to church. Even then it was a socal hippie church where we sang 70's songs like "Jesus is Just Alright" or "Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog". That being said, People Get Ready is a longtime top song for me. The vocal interplay on the Impressions version might be my favorite, but I don't have that on vinyl. Aretha is no slouch for a second choice though, the performances and production are top notch. This song also slows the tone of the mixtape down just enough to keep attention but segue into the next set of songs.
