December 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge: The Intergalactic Mixtape Dance-Off!

As I'm only playing Christmas songs up to the 25th, I thought I'd share that playlist early. Not sure of the flow (not helped by only having exactly 25 Xmas albums), but happy with the first look of this

Sadly, day 2 of the Beatles' Christmas Time Is Here is missing (at least for me)...

Here are my extra tracks. Not a real mixtape (and the Harry Nilsson song isn't on Spotify so I've had to sub in the (IMO inferior) Frank Sinatra version). But @Turbo you've inspired me to dabble in making a proper mix again. Cheers for a great month.

Agreed! It wasn't lost on me that while I was assembling the mixtape over the course of the month the Talking Heads "Nothing But Flowers" kept getting recommended to add to it.

The La's vinyl is good IMO but I'm no audiophile. It's a quiet pressing, and a fun spin. Timeless Melody is just a perfect song, lyrically and musically.

Yola is lovely, hearing her cover of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road live at the Ohana festival a few years ago was one of those moments that make live music so special (it's also on her debut album).

King Gizzard doesn't sample as far as I know, that intro struck me as a total 70's synth/Yacht Rock groove though, so it was a natural to move from Christopher Cross on.

I discovered Kae Tempest via their work on The Comet Is Coming, they do the spoken word on Blood of the Past. Loved the delivery, and just dug in from there.

Glad you enjoyed it! I've got everyone's mixtapes favorited, will start listening this week. Looking forward to it as well.

I got it. The keys in the King Gizzard track remind me of 10cc's I'm Not In Love. That's what it is. It's not a sample though I think.

I smell kickbacks!

Little does he know what the future holds...

Shit, I said that out loud.

So I did the draw... and the winner is...

@TenderLovingKiller® ! PM me your details. I'll send a little something something your way.

Welll Shiiiiiit! Thank you sir.

Now I feel really guilty that I haven’t yet done the drawing for my November challenge. I guess today is the day I take care of that then.

Regardless, I appreciate it and will reach out here shortly!

Thanks again!

 The world works in mysterious ways sometimes... PM me when you get a chance.

@Wicked Dreamer Love that you started out with Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? Doesn't get enough recognition as just an amazing timeless track. I just love the smooth bassline on it. So much love for Colemine & Karma Chief too... chef's kiss. That Emotional Oranges was a nice discovery for me earlier this month. Also really like how you kept peppering 80's synthpop with your selection of soulful tracks. It blended really well. Thanks for this!

Thank you! So many of Culture Club's hits are absolute 80s gems!

My dad loves to tell me about how "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" was the first song played on his first stereo (back in '82/'83). He was 19, had an accident with a lawnmower and bought his first stereo with the cash settlement or whatever that he got out of it. We found that 12" single about 5 years ago while browsing and he scooped it up immediately!

Finally getting a chance to catch-up on the few mixes I have remaining.

@Rip_City I quite enjoyed your soulful opening with Amber Mark and Kero Kero Bonito going into the deep basslines of Mikey's Song followed by some old school funk with AWB. The whole thing stays pretty smooth with several reference points to keep the listener anchored (AAL, Daft Punk, Vince Guaraldi, Prince, Air). Makes for a pretty unique mix amongst the bunch of us. Actually, the cultural variety in songs felt like I was listening to a Late Nite Tales mix. Just missing the narrated story at the end. Well done! Thanks for sharing.

@4080 Haha, yep... mix is complete chaos! But some fantastic tunes in there. I've already commented on the opener, but The Apples, ESG, New Pornographers, DJ Shadow, Moreno & Gismonti, Ugly Duckling, Lee Fields, Funkadelic, Billy Joel, LCD Soundststem, Julie Driscoll, Binkie Griptite, The Rapture, in particular - that's all top quality in my book. Some pretty cool transitions in there despite the chaos - Moreno & Gismonti ---> Ugly Duckling ----> Lee Fields is pretty cool. I also like how Marcia Maria follows Uniao Black ---> Goodie Mob ---> Roots Manuva to lighten things up. Fun listen. Anyway, thanks for playing and sharing!

Appreciate you listening! I was thinking of editing it down but I knew that that would be me changing songs and adding things that either didn't fit the prompt or I didn't actually own, which I kind of did anyway...it was a fun month and has got me actually playing records again even if it's only one or two a day it's better than buying one or two a day and never playing them...I think it is anyway...

Thanks @Turbo ! I only have a couple picture discs (this one works especially well with the Guardians of The Galaxy mixtape theme) and zero ELO in my collection.

This place is the best!

Awesome! It was selected precisely because of the spaceship on the cover  ... that and one track is on the Vol. 2 soundtrack. It's a great album - hope you enjoy! Although, I didn't think I was sending you a picture disc... damn.

I appreciate it! Do you know if I need to remove the heavy plastic cover from this to avoid “off gassing” or have they fixed that issue?

yeah, I really would. Put them in a new inner and any generic outer until you find something better.

I'm trying to look back at what I ordered and the picture is definitely the standard record with two black vinyl LPs. Give me a few secs to go through the listing.

EDIT: shit yeah, the picture is 2 black LPs but the text says picture disc. Ugh. If it sounds like crap, let me know and we can sort something out with them.

No worries man! I am sure it will get the job done. Though it is kinda shitty that Sound Of Vinyl isn’t making it clear in their ordering process.

The picture disc makes if feel like a major award that can also also play music!
