Vinyl Me Please Rap & Hip Hop

So I’m in for R.A.P Music (love that album) and Quasimoto. Quas took me a little while to warm up to. But after smoking some green and having a late night listen, it really clicked for me. (yay drugs)

First Born I haven’t given a full listen to yet. I start losing interest about halfway through.

Because it’s only 70 minutes long @NewsFedora !

There are so many single LP’s on the VMP store that are more than 40 minutes long.

Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly is 79 minutes long and is on 2 LP’s!

Sade’s Love Deluxe is more than 45 minutes long and is on a single LP. The latest pressing of it sounds incredible!

The full track listing for First Born can easily fit on 2LP’s. I don’t know why the spread it into 3LP’s, as those pressings weren’t even 45RPM.

Aquemeni is only 74:47 and on 3 LPs, but it is easily my best sounding hip hop album, so maybe they were onto something.

I have that one too and it is a really good pressing! Bernie Grundman did an excellent job with mastering it!

With Aquemini being on 3LP’s, it does benefit from having more space for the grooves which means less compression. So First Born certainly would benefit if it was a 3LP pressing, but so would many another albums like Kendrick Lamar’s TPAB and D’Angelo’s Voodoo and Erykah Badu’s Mama’s Gun and Prince Paul’s A Prince Among Thieves etc

Prince Paul’s A Prince Among Thieves sounds just as good as the Aquemini pressing, as does the VMP pressing for Salt N Pepa’s Very Necessary!

I would so love an audiophile level version of TPAB, the instrumentation on that album deserves that treatment. Certainly a lot of hip-hop albums need space to breathe on vinyl.

Omg, an audiophile pressing of TPAB would be absolutely incredible! I’d probably cry if that happened! And I would buy two copies because I know I’d be spinning the pressing so much!

I believe the original Aquemini was mastered by Brian Gardner (at Grundman) and seems to have been recorded very well.

I don't agree that the VMP PAT sounds as good, but I am happy with it.

I think it does sound as good. The pressing for A Prince Among Thieves is very spacious sounding, has great depth to it and a nice open soundstage. It’s an excellent pressing in my opinion but Very Necessary really is in my opinion, the best sounding hip hop pressing I own!

What about Blonde?

I'm sorry that was mean.

I absolutely love the three Rap & Hip-Hop ROTM’s! The colour variants for all three releases are excellent and I really dig the alternate album art for the Quasimoto! The Killer Mike and Eyedea & Abilities ROTM picks are outstanding ones in my opinion!

I’m looking so forward to spinning these three R&HH ROTM’s and am so happy the sub is continuing to choose great picks, and no dud picks like with the Future and N*E*R*D pick from last year. Even Rick Ross was pretty disappointing in my opinion!

Killer Mike, Madlib and Eyedea & Abilities is a sick lineup! 🔥🔥🔥

tp be honest this was definitely my opinion on the album so far.... i dont think im big into the rhymesayers scene (MF doom doesn't really count as rhymesayers as he just HAPPENED to have an album released on them).. but like the super lyrical super dense and complicated scene they seem to work in is too much for me

So I'm not sure where to post this, but since Quasi is one of the R&HH picks, this is as good of a place as any. For Christmas I has put Tom Waits' "Bad as Me" vinyl on my list.. My brother bought it for me through Amazon. I opened the gift, and it was still In the Amazon shipping container. I pulled it out of the container, and it was "Loop Digga" from Madlib….. not quite what I was expecting to see when I opened that box. Made for some surprised faces at Christmas and some good laughs.

This happens with about 5% of amazon vinyl shipments in my experience.

In news that will upset approximately 4 of you, they are doing away with the stencils as of April (and it sounds like they are adding a booklet for each track).

This is a huge move for the better. The stencils are a fine homage to old school hip hop culture, but I find them unwieldy and one more thing to keep track of and try to keep mint.

And only a few if them were any good. Most were just blah.
