I read Herbie’s biography a while back and was always curious about the amount of emphasis he placed on the Joni Letters. The album clearly means a lot to him.Man, all the albums in this boxset are pretty awesome. The Joni Letters are a beautifully melancholic batch of recordings aren't they. Think thats the one that surprised me the most, guess I was expecting the least from it.
Same. A late era Herbie Hancock album full of Joni Mitchell covers doesn’t exactly sound all that exciting to me on paper. But it’s actually real solid. And you can tell a lot of thought and passion went into it.Man, all the albums in this boxset are pretty awesome. The Joni Letters are a beautifully melancholic batch of recordings aren't they. Very interesting timing on my end as well. Next month I’ll have the Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell box set touching down. Can’t waitSame. Could be Mingus? His big albums were spread across a whole series of labels.and another that focuses on a "vitally important member of jazz history" that requires working with 3 labels to get HIS catalogue out there.
Three down and I can pretty safely say that this Herbie box is the best thing I’ve picked up from VMP in the 5 years I’ve been a member… along with Room On Fire that is
if anyone is on the fence I’d get off it and pick one up.
There's just too many to guess at this point.......but lets do so anyway!Could be Mingus? His big albums were spread across a whole series of labels.

That sounds awesome. A Jazz Messengers anthology set would be sweet. They’re going to keep pulling me in with these jazz anthology sets...There's just too many to guess at this point.......but lets do so anyway!
I was actually thinking that an Art Blakey one would be so so so cool. There has been so many iterations of the Jazz Messengers that it could essentially be an overview of the 'greatest' line-ups from the 50's through to 1990 when he passed.

Jazz Anthologies are probably a smart way to go - the format lends itself well to the genre, audiophile level recordings go for a pretty penny, and the fan base has lots of disposable income. That sounds awesome. What someone at vmp said about a grateful dead anthologyprobably a smart way to go - the format lends itself well to the genre, audiophile level recordings go for a pretty penny, and the fan base has lots of disposable income.
And it would have worked if they had actually spent a hot minute figuring out what Deadheads would have bought instead of retreading albums everyone had for years already. What someone at vmp said about a grateful dead anthology
Well I've been working hard to keep my VMP orders down. Doing pretty well until now if I say so myself. However, I've been going back to Herbie off-and-on since it was announced. So with this thread and the SHF comments mostly being favorable this is my 2nd VMP Anthology after original Blue Note.
I upped to the 3mth for the discount, made a quick email to VMP CS to get it updated asap ( less than CS 24hr turnaround and they applied a store credit to my acct b4 I ordered), and a couple unboxing videos I went for it. It is Herbie Hancock. I have good quality audiophile versions of 1st 3 in the box so it should be fun to compare. The rest will add to my HH discography.
I could definitely see them making a Wayne Shorter box. He and Herbie are best mates and I can see them chatting about the idea. Shorter also has had a really diverse career so it could certainly go down a similar route with Weather Report etc.My guess is they're going to go with one of the living legends. Sonny Rollins or Wayne Shorter, probably.
