So much this.Besides the pathetic lack of diversity here, what kind of self-centered boring people are they? The constant gravitation towards white cis-male stories is preventable now even while it takes the years for the demographics of the ranks to be corrected. People should stop treating cinema as an opportunity for male gazing, and more as Eberts "empathy machine." For me there's nothing more interesting than exploring someone else's POV, but I guess most Academy members would rather see theirs reinforced.
For all the people bitching about De Niro not getting a nom for the Irishmen I'm like he's played that role 10 times already!! As a middle age white guy I'd much rather watch The Farewell or The Last Black Man in San Francisco or Parasite over Marriage Story, the Irishman, or Joker.
