January 2021 Challenge Thread - It's All One Song! And One Raffle!

Day 29 - late career album

Handel - Messiah

I'll be the first to concede I've gone a bit off-piste here, but Handel was 57 when the Messiah was first performed. And well this was the one album in my to-play pile that seemed to fit the bill. This is a slightly ironic album for me as my Dad used to drag me to this every Christmas and I absolutely hated it. But I quite like it now...

Day 29: “Seems like that guy singing this song been doing it for a long time. Is there anything he knows that he ain’t already said?” – Play a later career album.

Ride - This Is Not A Safe Place

Coming almost 30 years after their debut, and a couple years after their first album in over 20 years, this album (along with Weather Diaries) shows that they've settled into a nice groove in this later portion of their career.

Day 28: ARC – Companion release to Weld, it’s 30+ minutes of feedback. Play an album with feedback or noise

So much guitar feedback and noise goodness from both Fripp and Belew on this record.
This came in at #20 on my N&G Top 50, although some listens makes me want to call it #1

janet jackson - unbreakable

she’s a legend that still deserves more credit than she gets. 2004 really f’d her over.

Day 17: “In Eldorado town there lives a great bullfighter” – Play something from the southern hemisphere. The warmer the better.

Orchestra Baobab "Specialist in all styles"

A fantastic group from Senegal, whose other albums I need to explore further. ❤️

I'd urge you to check out these two - from their hey-day (some of the songs on Specialist are re-recordings of these) and newly reissued

Day 30: The Mynah Birds – Did you know that one of Neil’s early bands, the Mynah Birds, also had Rick James as a member? Play something superfreaky, bring the funk.

Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers - Bustin’ Loose

It’s unacceptable to live in the DC area and not own a copy of this go-go classic. I think they might have issued these when you go to pick up your driver’s license.
