Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Oh, I've never had a problem with that, I even used to remove the UD cover when using it. I just know some dislike that "little" inconvenience. ;)

Deal breaker here. I’ve nowhere to put a fully removed cover. That said I’m particular, no button press speed changer also is, and the market is big!

I finally know my cash available for a Phono Pre Amp. Opinions? Sutherland Insight vs Darlington Labs MM7? Thoughts? Currently happy with Vincent Pho 8 but I figure I can do better? I have a Marantz PM8006 and an old school Pioneer SX3700 and in my opinion the dedicated Pho8 blows both away as phono pre amp wise. Curious on the group think after the Darlington Labs hype I have been reading.

My brother-in-law told me I could have this broken marantz reciever. He thinks I could get it fixed for 400-500 dollars. I posted about upgrading my setup recently and I’m wondering if this would be a nice piece of the upgrade. Any thoughts on this model?

Refurbished 2270s are going for $2k+ on eBay if that tells you anything.

Take it, and get it fixed!, classic vintage sound and twinkly blue lights :) Let us know where your located and perhaps we can recommend a good tech. You can also post in the Vintage Audio thread here for more opinions:
Once the issues are fixed and the caps replaced by a good tech it's likely to be good for another 25 years+ with a nice pair of vintage or modern speakers!

I am in LA. My brother in law gave me a recommendation of a guy in the valley but I would love to look into other options. Any idea if this would pair well with Wharfedale Lintons? I am leaning towards those after getting them recommended to me by several folks here.

Yeah that’s one of the good old Marantz’s it’s definitely worth investing in getting it mended and upgraded by a real specialist and I think you’ve got a fantastic piece of the upgrade there to go. There are also companies who remake the wooden surround for them too if you don’t have it and want that look.

I think @marshall has the Linton’s paired with a vintage Marantz and can give you an idea. I’m not sure if it’s the same one but it’s one of a similar vintage from what I remember.

It needs a top anyway so do you mean I could have a wooden one instead of a metal one? That would look good with the Lintons.

I think you’d still need to replace the metal top. Those amplifiers back in the day had the option of a walnut surround but not all of them have survived so you see them a lot without. There are companies who make new ones now to buy as replacements.

Found this by googling and I’m sure there are plenty more doing it in the states

Very cool. Thanks for the tip.

@HiFi Guy will have a solid opinion on the Marantz with Lintons.

For classic Marantz repair/restoration in LA I would try George Meyer AV. Classic Audio in SD is also good but the owner can be difficult. If you move forward please keep us updated on your adventure on the vintage audio thread.

Great thanks I will check out George Meyer AV. I was recommended Howard Bardach Audio Specialist in Valley Village. Maybe I will contact them both.

Let us know how it works out. And I think your brother is about right, probably going to be between 350-600 is get fixed and restored depending on what needs to be done.

I was recently given a quote of $400 for a rebuild of a 2235B from a reputable shop. Didn’t ask the specifics of the work so use that as a ballpark figure. As it is, the old Marantz sounds really sweet with some PSB 300i
bookshelf speakers. I highly recommend the PSBs as Awesome speakers that can be found at very reasonable prices.

Yes I have a 2245 that pairs really nicely in terms of sound and cosmetically the walnut finish matches my Marantz case (repro) perfectly. The 2270 would be even better than mine. Refurbished 2270's go for $1000+ consistently and if you get a quality recap etc done you're set. If you don't want that freebie I'll pay to have it shipped to me!

Might be worth giving Common Wave Hi-Fi here in LA a message, wonder if he'd do it for you, if not he may be able to point you in the right direction.
