The Grammy Awards Thread

The only album out of the AOTY nominee that I own Is Lana Del Ray so that would be my choice but I never thought she really stood a chance. I always felt like Swift winning AOTY was fait accompli.

I was more upset last year when Harry Styles beat Beyonce.

Last year I was more upset Beyonce Lost, than I was upset that he specifically won. This year I’m more upset she won and less mad about any specific artist losing

Do we have more info on Killer Mike’s altercation other than it was a fight? Will’s slap was televised for all to see, which sounds worse, but actually made everyone think it was part of the show in the moment. After the dust settled I do agree he should’ve been removed from the audience at the very least.

Unrelated, I really kind of hated how some artists used the acceptance speech to either trash the award/org they won it from out to just blatantly promote a new project. I get it but it felt cheap and insulting to the other nominees to have that happen multiple times.

Jay-Z’s speech was funny at times but uncomfortable at others (his “some of you don’t deserve to be here” line was a low blow)

Then Miley’s second speech she said that the award means nothing, then caught herself and turned around to walk the statement back a bit to the hard working people that operate in the shadows for her.

All in all, it was a weird fuckin’ Grammys.

Giving Jay Z an honorary after all the ways they screwed him over and the year after snubbing RENAISSANCE was a recipe for disaster. Him calling them out tonight felt timely given how the rest of the night went.

And I get why artists say the Grammys don’t matter, but If you feel that way don’t submit your albums to be nominated. There are countless musicians whom a Grammy win would mean a hell of a lot to

I really thought that Styles album was reductive and boring though.

Styles was absolutely boring and I forget what I listened to the moment it’s done. Swift’s isn’t boring and is more memorable but the things that make it memorable are positives (like the horribly cringe worthy lyrics)

I felt similarly about Midnights to be honest.
Yeah, I am not defending Midnights. The difference between last year and this year for me was expectations, I expected Beyonce to win last year, her album was arguably the biggest album of the year and instead they gave it to Harry Styles.

This year I expected Taylor Swift to win, her album was arguably the biggest album of the year. If SOS or GUTS or …Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. “upset” and had won instead I wouldn’t have been disappointed (and if LDR won I woulda been genuinely happy) as I find those albums to be worthy of the recognition.

But it’s the Grammys the award show where Lionel Richie beats out Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, and Prince to win AOTY. They’ve always disappointed more often than got things right.

You are assuming the Grammys is about music - it is not! It is about pop performers at best, and really about sales combined with an attempt at some DEI range.

But under what rationale does that expectation happen is more where I'm going:

Like, Harry's House was FAR more commercially successful than Renaissance was. Harry's House was the #2 selling album in the U.S. in 2022 (funny enough, behind Taylor Swift's Midnights), it had the bigger single, it had more radio airplay. I know folks here kind of like to ignore that it exists, but Harry Styles and BTS were the two biggest non-Swift pop stars in 2022 by almost any metric you want. If we thought Swift was the obvious winner this year, Styles was the obvious winner last year by that logic.

Beyonce crushed the critical reception...but so did Boygenius/LDR/Olivia/Sza from this year's batch. It's just very similar - a heavily selling, mainstream, white artist winning AotY over a more adventurous/sonically interesting, critically adored release by a woman of color (for the most part, minus Lana on the woman of color part).

(Edit: I'm excluding Bad Bunny from the above because, I mean, the Grammys recognizing Bad Bunny on the biggest stage is never gonna happen)

Grammys are such a weird experience when you listen to all the good music that actually comes out in a year. Like it blows my mind that so much of the world truly believes the artists and albums nominated for Grammys are indicative of the best music that came out in the last year.

It’s just a show that pits industry plant versus industry plant, it’s not an open dialogue with the actual music world. The few Grammy nominated artists that actually deserve to be there seem to always get snubbed. As a result, I haven’t watched a Grammys since Macklemore beat out Kendrick Lamar.

I loved Jay-Z’s speech. “Some of y’all don’t deserve to be in the category” feels like my thoughts in a nutshell. Every year I look and say “Who’s nominated? Oh riiiiiiiiiiigght, yeah that’s hilarious but ok”. These categories are just not representative of the talent that’s out there making music with their whole heart and soul, just feels representative of who the big labels have sunk the most money into.

Anyway shouts out HOV for telling the truth!

I think the act ranking music is inherently absurd and realistically their is no objective answer. I don’t think the Grammys should be taken seriously and I feel the same about any rating site like AOTY or rym. For me the fun comes from indulging them in their absurdity; pretending they are as important and serious as the academy thinks they are
