It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

Re: the 13 - 0 score.

I'm conflicted. On one hand, yeah, it seemed like the US was just being mean after a certain amount of goals were scored and they kept going.

On the other hand - this is the biggest stage for these players. Period. They are playing for it all. I'm not sure how you coach your players to stop playing their best. You only have a set amount of subs. There isn't really a "B" or "C" team to put on the field because the rosters are limited in number. So, what do you do? You still have HUGE names out on the field. You don't want them to get out of their groove by having them take their foot off of the gas. They have been practicing and training at a high level for years. I imagine it is hard to not play at the level you are used to. And celebrating after a goal is what you do. It just is. I didn't see anyone getting in Thailand's face after the goals and acting like an ass.

I don't know. I feel bad for Thailand. But I'm not going to say,"I can't wait for France to beat them" because the US did what they were supposed to which is win. That's a tough situation.

There is nothing to be conflicted about. The aim of any football team is to crush the opposition and score as many as possible, especially in a world cup! You want your team to have an invincible aura about them, you want opposition teams to feel beaten before the game has even kicked off.

I agree. After seeing all the double standard nonsense in the press yesterday and the homophobia on social media, I'm all in on the US looking invincible the other day. I'm no longer conflicted.

Jeez, jaycee, really?

Playing the man, not the ball there.

Will be interested to see if the moderators are working off a double standard.

Nice wee litmus test for a fledgling forum.

Definitely, they’re professionals, you go for the jugular. Although I’d rather see a team I was following have a stern test against a decent team and win 2-1 or 3-1 than a 13-0 tbh. You are battle hardened and you get more confidence because the win means something.

Well this thread got awkward and silent. Back to football, everyone?

SO MANY GAMES RIGHT NOW. WWC, Gold Cup, Copa America. I love it. Stand outs:

-Mexico is running away with it right now.
- That broken arm in the Canada/NZ game was terrifying
- Netherlands still look dangerous
- Mexico are killing it in Gold Cup
- Argentina is cursed
- MAK as left back for Canada Men’s team? Very weird.

Netherlands are underrated.

I'm excited to sit and watch a whole game today! Work's been too busy to watch full games.

Carli Lloyd has still got it 🔥🔥
I find her to be the most confounding player. She plays really selfishly. She doesn't pass. My friends and I all jokingly dislike her. Of course we want the US to score but dammit, she's gonna get a hat trick, isn't she?

Julie Ertz is so underrated. She is dangerous as heck on set pieces.

Strange starting line up. Happy to see Kriegs get a cap. I guess they are resting Morgan, Heath and Rapinoe for Sweden.

She also seems very timid in possession. In the first half there were several times she just tapped her passes to other players, no forcefulness or anything.

That is how she always plays! She has been a thorn in my side for years. I contend that but for the 3 goals in the WC final last year, she would not be on the team this time around.

Endler is having a really great 2nd half! This game would be more of a blow out if not for her performance. Some amazing saves!

TOP for the European Champions. YNWA.

Sorry for your current situation OP.

Meh I’m 36 and have seen 13 league titles and numerous other trophies and I don’t feel the need to end my posts with meaningless acronyms...

I’ve got nothing to complain about and no doubt at some stage we will be back.

Yeah, it seems even more pronounced now but Carli doesn't contribute much in the build up then somehow conjures up these home run plays. I mean she almost had that arching header drop in as well from a ridiculous angle. And then there are games where it just doesn't happen and you wish someone else was out there.

Ertz is great. A solid foundation in the midfield and that header was perfect.

I admittedly don't watch much outside of the big tournaments and build up as well as high profile friendlies but I've always been impressed with Press. She rarely loses the ball in the final third and almost always makes the right pass. Just unlocks stuff in the final third for other people.
