Fresh Grabs

I've been thinning the herd recently and now have brought 3 wine boxes full of LP's to a local shop where the owner is very fair with trade-in value. The stuff I've brought him ranges from dollar-bin stuffers to records I'm sure he can price at $20-30 or more (Grateful Dead, Doors, Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac, Getz/Gilberto, Miles Davis, and the like). Today I cashed in for something I've had my eye on for a while--Neil Young's Official Release Series Discs 1-4, sealed. And apparently there's a story behind this particular box. I'm told it comes from the estate of a photographer who worked with Neil on his early albums. The photographer's wife enlisted a Salt Lake City antique books dealer to help her sell off parts of the estate. (This book dealer has been on Antiques Roadshow, if that's any kind of endorsement LOL.) He took care of the books from the estate, and connected the local record store owner with the widow to handle the records. Sounds like there was quite a bit of stuff, including four of these box sets, which have a scratch through the barcode as part of whatever transaction put them into this photographer's hands initially. The record shop sold three of the boxes and has had this one sitting in the shop for quite a while. I'm happy to help clean the slate for him! I'm going to have to find out the name of the photographer, and while the story isn't provable, that's okay by me because it's still kind of cool.

Nice grabs! I picked up two of those yesterday, I probably would have grabbed Vulgar Display of Power too but my Rhino copy sounds really good. I ended up ordering Far Beyond Driven (along with the Spiritualized reissue) from Amoeba using their 15% off sale. I was very pleased with both Slim Harpo and Pantera, they were both nicely pressed.
The Slim was something I was looking at, then you and others talking about the quality made me go back and get it. I thought about FarBeyond, but really spent most of my time with the first two when I was younger. Glad to hear the pressings are good!

Chet Baker Quartet - No Problem

Chet looks rough, a skeleton of his former self, from his battle with drug addiction. But this is a great late-career session for him.

I had some difficulty tracking this LP down, because only EU pressings exist. Thanks to @TransformerMan for spotting this German reissue on Amazon (of all places). I think they must have repressed it recently. Check this off the want list.

Edit: last track on Side A has a locked groove pressing defect. Guess I'll be returning this and it's back on the want list.

Went to the first Carboot of the year yesterday. I was a bit hesitant at first and to be honest there were far too many people walking around with masks BUT people did tend to keep their distance. There was a few times where I was browsing through a stack of record and turned to see someone waiting a few steps behind me which was good.

Duke Ellington And His Orchestra - The Nutcracker Suite (Philips, 1960 First Mono SEALED pressing)
Devadip Carlos Santana & Turiya Alice Coltrane - Illuminations (Columbia, 1974 First Pressing)
Oscar Peterson - Mellow Mood (Polydor/MPS, 1972 UK Pressing)
Lionel Hampton - Hamp! (World Record Club, 1962 First UK Pressing)
The Grateful Dead - American Beauty (Warner Bros, 1971 First UK Pressing)
Coleman Hawkins - Swing! (Fontana, 1964 First UK Pressing)

These all cost me a quid each and generally look to be in pretty good condition. The Duke Ellington was sealed which I find absolutely crazy! The Oscar Peterson is part of his 'Exclusively For My Friends' series which are my favourite records of his, just a few more to go until I have the complete set. I saw the Alice Coltrane/Santana at my local charity shop last year in less than ideal condition for a staggering £28 (absolute rip off) so I was glad to find this copy. I have just finished listening to the Grateful Dead. Unfortunately there are a few pops/ticks but nothing too overwhelming and well worth the price paid.

Great finds again!

Ive recently picked up that Santana / Coltrane record myself (think i paid £8 from my local) and love it! Needing to start picking up more Alice Coltrane stuff for my collection!

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - Moanin'

It seems I got an anti-Mather copy. Bought this cheap from uDiscover with free shipping (half the price of my Norwegian local) and it arrived impeccable. No scuff marks, no dust. I was sure I was going to need to clean it but I've put it straight on and it sounds great. This was the one classic record I needed an upgrade for so really happy to get it.

Illuminations!!! What a great get!

Got some new records today

IMG_20210424_152308.jpg

The limited white vinyl of Black Country, New Road "For the first time" from HHV. I had it on order for quite a while and now finally got it delivered.

Gnostic Gorilla "Hide the Ghost". They are a great sounding dark wave/ goth/industrial metal project. Still a bit unknown and I came across them by chance. Glad this was finally released on vinyl, got it from JPC.
