December 2020 Challenge Thread: Let's Go Out With A Bang (The return of the raffle!)

Day 26 - Boxing day

Generally for gift giving occasions I just send links of records I want to my wife. That was the case with this one:

Watched this yesterday with the kids. Gotta say, I was really surprised when I saw these names come up as having done the score. Exceptional movie & score, I think we are going to watch it again today.

Still need to watch the movie, but I think we’ll get to it in the next couple days. Maybe a good NYE activity for the kids. Definitely one of the better TR/AR soundtracks for sure.

Day 27: Production

The Doobie Brothers - What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits

Produced by Ted Templeman who worked with the Doobies from their debut album until their Farewell Tour live album. He’s also worked with Van Halen (from their debut up to 1984), Michael McDonald solo, David Lee Roth solo, Van Morrison & Nicolette Larson among others.

Catch-up post! I've actually been listening, just not posting as my work desktop is easier to post from for this. Pics later too.

Day 24: Christmas Eve: Santa's Playlist
Play something you think Santa would listen to while delivering presents

This gave me an excuse to play one of my favorite driving albums that I feel like Santa would dig: fast paced, light, consistently interesting, with some nice contrasting but ultimately easy to listen to voices, plus Santa needs to pay for some Elfen benefits and the live version is so much more affordable than the album proper

Jenny and Johnny - Live From Third Man

Day 25: Merry Christmas!
Play your favorite Christmas album

I actually don't own my favorite Christmas album on vinyl, a pretty egregious oversight (and it was already claimed), so let's go with what I played Christmas morning

She And Him - A Very She and Him Christmas

Day 26: Boxing Day
Play a record gifted to you that you're thankful to own

I got a few albums on my longer term wishlist for the holidays this year as a gift. One was so good I got it twice (so you may be seeing a copy pop up in PIF in the future). This also completed my studio album collection of Jason Isbell (and the 400 Unit), leaving just the pricy-as-heck RSD live album left that I will never get. I really enjoyed the first playthrough as well, lots of really good tracks on here beyond Alabama Pines and Codeine which are better known

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Here We Rest

Day 27: Production
Play an album with a great producer

OK, this is a retrofit for sure, as I really wanted to play the Maggie Rogers I was gifted, but I was pleasantly surprised to see Greg Kurstin on the production credits for this one. For those unfamiliar, Greg Kurstin is half of the super-enjoyable pop duo The Bird and the Bee, but is also behind of ton of great pop songs producing singles and albums in the past couple years by SIr Paul, Sir Elton, Harry Styles, Halsey, Beck, Maren Morris, and a slew of other artists.

Maggie Rogers - Heard It in A Past Life

Day 28: Graffiti
Play a record with a cover that is signed, vandalized or spiced up in some way

Sweet, an excuse to play Sarah Jarosz. I remember getting this one signed after her show in Portsmouth, NH supporting the album. It was the last concert I went to with one of my really good work friends and musical confidants before he moved to Texas and she was as sublime as ever.

Sarah Jarosz - Undercurrent

Just got this as part of a christmas present from a friend. I'm not that familiar with Deep Purple, but liking what I'm hearing so far.

I appreciate the fact that this has the classic Dymo Label in the lower corner with the previous owners name though. That was a very 70's way to mark your records. Thanks Ric Smith for taking good care of this, wherever you are!

Buzzcocks - Love Bites

Not sure the story with this. I bought this used in the mid 80s in Canada, but is an early UK pressing based on the matrix info. Somebody decided to take a blank white sleeve and recreate the original in pen. They did a pretty good job I think, at least on the fonts, not so much on the band.
