The N&G Top 500 Albums of All Time!!!

It's a very important album for me - it got me started down the loud guitar music path when it came out. There's just something about it now that means I don't go back to it as often as that importance would suggest. I think you're right, there is definitely something about it that feels a little "off" about it now; a whiff of hair-metal hairspray that doesn't do it any favours...

I don’t mind the hairspray, it’s more how my wife would react if the moaning section of “Rocket Queen” starts playing while our 4-year-old is within earshot.

Status update: Trying to cut my list down to 50, I decided I had to drop compilations and greatest hits albums. There are quite a few that are so good, excellent front-to-back listens, and were "formative" listening experiences and/or important history lessons for me (Hot Rocks and Legend especially), but I figured they were mostly gateways to the "real" albums at the end of the day.

Anyway, ranking them is proving harder than cutting now, especially towards the bottom half of the list. Trying to figure out a method to go about it, and how to be (mostly) satisfied with the result.

Enjoying seeing what y'all have posted - your taste is immaculate.

I think I am done with my list and rankings...I want to revisit next week, there still may be a 'whoa, how did I forget that one?' album or two that strikes me.

These four just missed the cut
Deep Purple - Made in Japan
Crosby Stills Nash and Young - Deja Vu
Sturgill Simpson - A Sailor's Guide to Earth
Michael Kiwanuka - Love & Hate

I had a hard time including most of the new stuff I love right now...it's not time tested yet which for me is part of what makes an album appear on what became a short list of 50.

When is the overall reveal date starting?

I might drop my 50 countdown up once closing date for entries is passed

I don’t think there is a reveal date yet. Submissions close 1/12 but I suppose it all depends on how long it takes @Woob_woob to crunch such a huge volume of data! There is no limitation on when and how you reveal your own picks though, you can do that wherever, and however, you chose.

35-31

35.The second album I ever purchased on my own was Social Distortion- Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell, it was difficult not to add that one on my list because when you own less than 10 albums they all end up meaning something to you. Alas, Social D’s greatest impact was that they led me to discovering Stray Cats which I fell in love with and then led me to discover a whole slew of other bands that I ended up loving.

34. For some reason Jack Johnson gets so much hate, I mean really ugly stuff on a bullying level (save the bullying for groups like Crazytown and Creed). Whatever, I think he’s awesome and I love this album a whole bunch. Suck it.

33. I listened to this album a bunch in my preteens and always loved it. I lost touch with it when I was busy destroying my eardrums with a Nu Metal stage. Then in 2004 I got a nice pair of headphones and listened to this album and it was seriously mind opening. I’d never heard it like that before and it became a quick favorite all over again.

32. This is a hidden gem of an album not a lot of people have heard of before. And if you believe that you’ve been in a coma for like the last 26 years. It’s good, I’ll let others do the real talking on it.

31. I truly believe there’s a Costello album out there for everyone. There’s a lot of his I don’t care for but this is just one hell of an album, it flows wonderfully from start to finish and makes me want to cry-dance.

Let us know how that Sextant MOV sounds! I´ve been on the fence for weeks about getting this or not..
Sounds absolutely fantastic! It really nails down the album's sense of atmosphere and spacing, and the subtleties are just as engaging as the red-hot what-the-hell-is-this funkiness. Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good pressing of this album

Yes I'm fine with greatest hits in situations like that and I'd be willing to listen to an argument for fully original soundtracks, but live albums and comps are just collections of songs from other albums imo

But Eric Clapton Unplugged is unquestionably his best album... ;)

I was thinking about tagging you but figured you were aware of this discussion.

I am also placing the same 1 album/artist limitation on myself.
I mean, you know me. There are few things I love doing more than channeling my inner Rob Gordon

I'm doing two per artist.
Hmmmm

I volunteer to do a write up for any album on my list. Though I have yet to reach the point in the thread that tells me whether this is top 100 (my hope) nor public (my hope).

Rules here:

RULES
  • Voting will be done in private, only votes Dmed to me will count
  • Votes will be in the form of list of 50 Greatest Albums lists (50 points for #1, 49 for #2....1 point for #50)
  • There are no restrictions on what is considered an album
  • All votes are due by 12/1/2020
  • Votes can be DMed to me at any time from now til the due date, but once a vote is entered it can't be edited

Other than that have fun. From now til 12/1/2020 feel free to talk up albums, post your list (or dont), talk about albums you think will make the main list but shouldn't, or really anything you'd like. Let's have fun talking about music.

Also serves as a bump for anyone who forgot a rule or two (like me).
