The N&G Top 500 Albums of All Time!!!

Sorry to convolute but I just thought of something.

Is this out list of favorite albums or our list of 100 best albums. Because my list would vary greatly. I can recognize and appreciate an albums greatness over some of my favorites.

I think the consensus is that favorites would be 1000x more fun (otherwise the N&G list will be just another variation of the RS/P4k-type lists).

I think it should be our favorites. If I’m making the list, while I recognize Sgt Peppers as being one of the most important records ever made, I’m not putting it as one of my favorites, which would make this list a lot more fun and representative of what we actually like.

Plus, I imagine that enough people have some of those canonized albums as personal favorites (I know my number one favorite is at the top of a lot of 2000s lists, for example), that plenty will show up.

Holy shit this is going to be infuriating to do, I love it. Thank god this'll last through the end of the year, because 1.) I can't see it taking me any less time to do a list like this, and 2.) we're all gonna need a distraction from whatever the hell happens in these next three months.

I agree with the simple ranked list like we did for the AOTY threads, and letting things like live albums/soundtracks/etc qualify (because I'll be damned if I can't nominate Suspiria!). I don't dislike the closed ballot idea, as long as we can also feel free to post our lists publicly as well, under the condition of edits not counting. One of my favorite parts of the AOTY threads was making my list, thinking "no way anyone else is gonna be putting this album on their list!", and finding out that a couple people actually did, which can generate some really fun discussion.

Definitely agree with this. I don't think anyone here needs to be told about the "objective" greatness of acts like Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, and The Beatles (even though only one of those have a chance in hell at making my list ;) ), and since this list is presumably meant to be primarily for the community's sake, we should all know that we won't offend anyone by not putting highly acclaimed albums on our lists.

Is it bad that as much as I love my AoTM pick, and though I think it was a great call for such a club thing, it won’t be in my top 50...
I have a few candidates as potential aotm picks and only a small fraction of those might end on the 50 best list. Choosing Beatles or Dylan or Radiohead would just not be great fits for that format. Though I really liked the lou Reed pick, which was one of the few artists I knew before

Interesting, obviously I disagree. Cultural impact is different from personal impact. E.g. just because something like TPAB is insignificant to me it doesn’t mean it’s not a great album. I think where we do agree is that this N&G list should be a list of “favorites.”

Part of the reason I’d rather go to 100 is because I’ve had a hard time incorporating jazz albums (most of which I’ve only been listening to for +/- 5 years) to my rock/pop rankings. It’ll be hard for me to justify bumping something like REM’s Life’s Rich Pageant (an album that would probably be at the back end of my top 50 but also something I’ve spent time with for 20+ years) to make room for a jazz album that has received many more spins over the past half decade but I don’t have as much of an emotional connection with. First-world problems, I know.
I think it's laughable that any one person is really qualified to gauge quality + impact. It's a futile exercise and why so many "top ______" lists are such bullshit. How do I rank an album that I can conceive of as significant without also "getting" the album? Is popularity really an important metric? I think it's more reasonable to do a top 50/100 albums we can personally vouch for, than to try imitate the pomposity and hubris of Rolling Stone or Pitchfork. So a combination of favorite/best, without pretending that it can possibly be objective or definitive in any way. I have favorites that aren't good and favorites I have no idea of their quality because I've loved them so long, and favorites I am confident are Very Good or Great Albums. We can each do our personal calculus about how those rank and which deserve to be featured on a collective top 500 list.

I mean Rubber Soul is my favorite Beatles record but Abbey Road is clearly the better album (and their best).
Hard disagree

also it would be really cool if one of the members who can specifically vouch for why the album on the list is so good could write up a little explaination on why its one of the best it would be fantastic.. i would proudly write one for the black parade, fantasma, or 1000 gecs, blood visions, or embryonic (just going by my personal list)
That is a great idea

What do you think about limiting the number of albums by the same artist(s)? Although I can understand that it is hard to restrict personal choices to one or two albums from certain artists, I find it annoying to see 5+ albums by the usual suspects in these lists. It might be interesting to see what happens if only 1 or 2 (3? 5? 20?) albums by same artists are allowed.

It seems artificial though. Some artists are just better, or mean more to the indivifdual. Why should that be restricted?
