Sexy M.F.'ers...The Prince Fan Thread

Have they announced what the next super mega boxset album they plan on doing is?

I think we most likely will see a "Parade" Super Deluxe next year. It seems many people think so.

And vinyl reissues/first editions of "Crystal Ball" , "The truth" , "The Vault - Old friends 4 sale", "Come" next year and possibly even "The slaughterhouse" and "The chocolade invasion" , "Xpectation" and "N.E.W.S".

I guess in 2022 we may see vinyl reissues of "Love Sexy" , "Batman" , "Diamonds and pearls" and "Love Symbol" , and hopefully one day also of "The Gold experience". As far as I know the problem is that there's a rights issue regarding "The most beautiful girl in the world", which keeps this from being reissued.

Yeah I rather don't think we see a Super Deluxe Vinyl of "Purple rain" as the Super CD reissue already happened few years ago. For sure at some point, but I don't see it coming the next years. It would be a great set though.

If I would rank his albums, it would look something like this. It's very hard, as I really love most of his records very much. It's subjective, of course. Mid for me means still pretty good. 😊

Top: SOTT, Purple Rain, Dirty Mind, 1999, Love symbol, Diamonds and pearls, 3121, The Gold Experience, Parade

High: Controversy, Around the World in a Day, Black Album,Lovesexy, The Rainbow Children, Prince, Batman, Emancipation, Crystal Ball

Mid: Graffiti Bridge, Chaos & Disorder, The Truth, Xpectation, Come, Rave, Musicology, 20ten, HnR1, HnR2, Lotusflow3r, MPLSound, One nite alone, The chocolate invasion, Art OfficialAge, Plectrum Electrum

Low: For You, NEWS,Planet Earth, The slaughterhouse

I will also note that I look at these tiers as insulated unto Prince. I figure there are two ways to look at artists will a large output - each piece of music relative to the artist themselves or each piece of music relative to music as a whole.

I think there are artists who have put out albums that are disappointing because you know what they're capable of and the album falls short of that expectation. However, it may be a good album relative to what else is put out at that time or music as a whole.

That's what get some artists w/ a "sophomore slump" IMO. They may have such a strong debut that the follow-up would have to bring the dead back to life to be able to live up to the acclaim and expectations; while it may still be a very good album if you didn't know what else they could do.

So, Prince's low and mid tier album, to me, are there because I have to compare them to what he has accomplished with his best work - the curve is steep! But his worst albums are better than some artist's very best.

These artists must have very poor discographies though! Can’t think of many artists I like where their best album is not as good as Prince’s worst album! I mean, there’s artists like Lindsay Lohan, Nickelback, Nicole Scherzinger and Jaden Smith who have no decent albums in my opinion...🤷‍♂️😂

Yes, but out of all those turds one is the shiniest; hence, their best (all my bowling scores are bad, but I still have a best). Prince's worst is better than Nickelback's best.

Out of curiosity, what would you rate Prince’s ‘Musicology’ out of 10? I was underwhelmed when I played that album recently! Half the tracks were skips for me. There were some great songs on there of course, like “Call My Name”, “What Do U Want Me 2 Do”, “Dear Mr. Man” and “On The Couch”, but the other tracks are average or just poor. Even though it’s like the 5th best song on the album, the song “Musicology” is so boring. I’d rate Musicology a 4.4/10. I definitely don’t want it in my collection anymore. Still definitely keeping 3121, as I still enjoy that album! It’s like a 7.1/10 for me! 👍

I mean they’re going to eventually reissue all of it. The next super, probably Parade. I’d assume Diamond and Pearls and Love Symbol will eventually get that treatment as well, but it really depends on what’s in the vault and what can they make albums out of when exploring it?

something worth thinking about once he had Paisley Park in 87, he could walk into a fully professional studio 24-7... there’s going to be so much material from that time period on.

While I do rank it low, I saw him on that tour so I have somewhat of a soft spot. He had a killer band backing him during that time.

The title track is really good and the bass part is funky AF (nice music vid too). The low point is probably Life 'o' the Party, for me. There's nothing I really hate on it, but nothing I love enough to make me often revisit. Probably 5/5.5

I would love a deluxe Parade boxset! I just want that deluxe Purple Rain Boxset though, especially after all those leftovers from the CD deluxe expanded edition are all such good songs!!! 💎🔑

@Murfocakes - You would be absolutely thrilled if a Deluxe Boxset of Parade got released! 😍👀

I think the album “For You” is so much better than a lot of the stuff in your Mid Tier. It’s like a 6.2/10 for me, whereas albums like ‘Rave’ is like a 2.5/10 - it just has so much filler and so many of the songs sound super outdated. Like it felt like there was no originality and it was obvious that it was an album of an artist that still records music but their music is nowhere near as good as their earlier stuff. That’s 100% the quality I got on Rave unfortunately. For You is a decent albums and features some really beautiful stripped down, charming songs with just Prince and the guitar. “Crazy You” is an exceptional song and “So Blue” is such a warm, endearing, winsome song! And you still jams like “Soft & Wet” that sound like Herbie Hancock produced the track during his fusion era! It’s great!

I’m a massive Prince fan. He’s my favourite artists as well so sorry if I’m coming off really harsh! I love him so much and he has a lot of 10/10 albums for me, but he does have some mediocre albums and Rave was definitely one of them!

Get yourself a CD player and then get the CD. Problem solved. You're welcome and I'll be here all day ;)
But I need to get that Record Cleaning Machine and Rega Exact MM cartridge first! So it’s going to be a while since I’ll buy a CD stereo! There’s a matching CD stereo for my Rega Brio amp and it’s like AUD$1300, so I’ll probably get it sometime mid next year! 😊🐒

No sugar (i.e. emojis) to make the medicine go down. You're out for blood
I want your blood! 😈💉🩸🧛‍♂️

And all the money in your retirement fund to help me purchase a new CD stereo, a new needle cartridge, a record cleaning machine and a few VMP exclusives I really want that I missed out on, like Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds! 🤣💰💰💰

I always enjoy when people rank certain albums higher than I do. I will revisit "For you" the next days. I actually even have it on vinyl. Completely agree on "Soft and wet", that song is amazing. I think the problem I have with that album is that it doesn't feel as exciting to me as all his next 10 records or so.

I can understand your thoughts on "Rave". It's also one of the albums in the my mid section that I would rate lower within that section for the exact reasons you've mentioned. Even though both "in2" and "un2" finally had been released on vinyl, I still haven't bought any of them yet.

I also agree with some you say about "Musicology". I think it was a very successful album for him in the US after some commercially lame years. I love 3121 so much more. Many songs to me feel a bit too simple / mainstream. However, I definitely agree with @Lord Diaper Baby that the title track is really good. I've listened to that song "Musicology" a few hundred times I guess and I still love that track, really funky. Also songs like "Illusion...", "A million days" and the ones you mentioned are great.

The Rainbow Children is a great, brave, artistic album with consistently interesting tracks, well recorded. A shock for someone who was considered a heritage artist at the time. Lotusflow3r is another solidly listenable, exciting album. I’d rate it much higher than MPLSound which came out simultaneously. I prefer both of these to many of those mentioned. Same way Bowie had 1.Outside and Blackstar. Genius like that just keeps searching for new ways to express.
