Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Getting back to this.

Currently my rig is as follows:

Turntable: Audio Technica LP120USB
Phono: the garbage that resides in the above
Receiver: Onkyo HT-R430
Speakers: not sure...floor standing speakers received as Christmas gift. Can't find a serial number/part number, though I have a photo of the right speaker and its logo attached.

Looking to move on from the AT-LP120 and purchase a new turntable + phono stage. Will be selling mine to a friend getting to vinyl for $100 for extra funds. A direct drive model would be preferred, as I would like DJing to be a potential future pursuit. Budget for the two components combined (TT + pre) would be $900~1200.

As I mentioned before, I've been eyeing the Pioneer PLX-1000 as the next step up. Currently seeing prices of $700 for new, though I'm fairly certain I have seen a new PLX-1000 for < $600 as recent as January this year. Looking at phono stages and doing preliminary research, but still far from knowledgable enough to select one outright without some guidance.

Thank you in advance for everyone's time and help!
Looks like the speakers are Infinity Reference 2000.4

what kind of cartridge are you planning on putting on it

the schiit mani is just plain amazing for moving magnet cartridges especially for the price, not sure about MC

I don’t know, you could check with musical fidelity but I though that most warranties were worldwide now?

I'd have to look into that. Of course it's been a long time since i've looked at electronics outside denmark but i just always assumed that warranties were only valid in the country it was sold.

You know they say assuming makes an ass of you and Ming. What did Ming ever do to you?

He knows what he did.

If you think our prices are a joke on the P3, sit down for the P6:

$1595 without cartridge
$1995 with Exact 2

The Exact sells separately for $595. Smart shoppers buy from the UK or Asia. Or buy something else entirely. Of course, then you are into shims, and a 4 mm rise in arm height makes the arm come in contact with the dust cover.

I understand the same happens to you in regards to MoFi- where the MoFi costs roughly the same as a P8.

Thats insane. I paid £275 for my RP3 when I got it with 5 years ago and that was with the elys. Admittedly the line was being phased out at the time but still. From memory the RP6 was about £800 with no cart.

The RP3 (and planar/ P3s) are stellar turntables. The issue is you need to really mod to realise their potential so buyers need to take their base price and add an external power unit, upgraded subplatter, decent cart, shim for the arm and new belt. With that US mark up, as good as the table is, that would make it a total, total non starter as youd be looking at another £400 plus the cart price on top of the base price. It's good but not that good.

Well, after being lost in in mail for 45 days my Analogue Seduction order of Rothwell Attenuators finally arrived today, I tested them out with my most troublesome track off of The Beta Band EPs Box and they worked like a charm. No popping, so the signal from the stage was overdriving the ADC or DAC chip in the amp like I had figured, now whether that's the fault of the stage or the amp I don't know... guaranteed though that each manufacturer would just blame the other. I'm not positive yet that these attenuators haven't affected the sound quality but that first track sounded good to me. I'll have to do further tests but thanks @HiFi Guy for the suggestion of trying attenuators, did the trick!

There has been some questions about what to get for an entry level-ish phono preamp lately. Musical Fidelity phono preamps have some strong supporters in these parts and @AnthonyI runs this particular one in his 2nd rig. If you are ok with buying used from a reputable dealer...

Looks like I know what my next upgrade after a headphone amp and a new cartridge is

Well... The PrimaLuna amp and pre amp just shipped, they arrive next Wednesday from Upscale. I may have a few questions next week...😊 I hope they are great and I'm pretty sure they will be -- and I really thank all of you for the feedback and guidance.

I loved my dad and he was a heck of guy -- it'd be pretty great to have this be a way to hang out with him for the next 10 years. Thanks everybody! Have a great night or morning.

Congrats! Which ones did you get?

The EVO 400s -- it's a little terrifying as I'm going from a 10 year old $1000 home theater avr to ummmm... Something different? But I'm sure it will be great... It is just two very different worlds... and as a fun note, my current recover just developed a firmware error that I understand is a pain to fix so I am completely taking that as "a sign" (not really, but I might as well)

Thanks again! You and the forum are just incredibly generous with your time and knowledge.

Is this when we mention the extra pair of pants to @HuddieLedbetter ? ;)

I’ll tell you the same thing I’ve told others- the PrimaLuna gear has a long break in period. Mine went like this:

0-10 hours: Oh no, I’ve made a mistake.
11-100 hours: gets better with every hour
100 hours- this is really really nice

But that wasn’t it. At about 8 months it became incredibly amazing- like someone flipped a switch. I’m guessing it takes that long for the output transformers to break in.

Mid September will be 2 years and to this day it sounds better after it’s been on for an hour.

Enjoy!

Did someone point this deal out to @Rip_City I know was looking at tables, carts and phonos!

I agree with everything @HiFi Guy mentioned, especially this part.......

What I've gotten into the habit of doing is turning it on first thing in the morning and then turning it off before bed, whether I'm using it all day or not, in the beginning this will also help that break in a bit and it being on all day isn't going to hurt anything ;)

Can't wait to hear what you think.

I'm so excited. So here's a question: Am I at a point where I'm supposed to be thinking about speaker cables and interconnects?

I basically have a mismatch blend of old standard cable, some blue jean, some 10-15 year old monster cable, etc and nothing I own is younger than 10 years outside of the phono cables
