Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Compared "I Wanna be Your Dog" on Spotify. The John Cale mix just seems to have a lot more character with the fade in of the guitar and drums in the beginning. The JC mix of this song sounds a lot louder too.

Well 2 of them are imo

I do agree the Stooges is an essential pick but why the John cale mix and not the original.

Rick Ross is the only real "really they chose that?" Decision but that's more because i don't find it a modern classic

Was Rick Ross confirmed or it's just the most likely guess so far?

Funny I find the opposite. I find the Cale mix feels like a band running through their set for the first time in the studio, a bit unsure of themselves. But also probably because I have been listening to the original probably 30yrs before I heard the Cale version.

That said I remember the Cale mix was interesting as most of the songs were significantly shorter and they were sequenced in a different order. Maybe heard in isolation from the original might make a difference
I think that this is a fantastic curio for Stooges fans to have in their collection, but in terms of members who don't really know The Stooges I think that this is generally a disservice to this album. The Cale mix is tinny and distorted and while it's definitely interesting in terms of the differences between it and the wide release mixing in my opinion it's a much tougher listen than the wide release. It's certainly more raw, it certainly sounds more "punk", but in my opinion it's inferior to the wide release mix. But I also have the Bowie and the Iggy Raw Power Mix along with the Iggy Raw Power Mix/KG remix so this wouldn't be the first duplicate Stooges album in my collection. But seriously, if you don't know this album, I'd suggest checking out the KG remaster before you make the JC mix your go to...

I'm not that familiar with The Stooges, is this a record fans have been clamoring for for decades? It was rejected by the label and the band right? Serious question: Why is this "essential"?

If you start going down a rabbit hole of which VMP albums are "Essential" or "Classics" or even "Rap/Hip Hop" then you are going to have a bad time

Well I thought the silver lining to my own virus relocation issues was the chance to go home and open and enjoy the vinyl I had been stockpiling from VMP. Opened up my QOTSA delivery to find that a stray centre label was glued to one side rendering that entire side unplayable. Great quality control VMP. This after it took 3 months to deliver one order and then they canceled two of the albums as being out of stock. My VMP days are well and truly over.

The original album is essential. The Cale mix is a curio at best.
Agreed. Very odd pick to give us an alternative mix to a classic album. It’s not like the Cale mix is seminal. It’s just different. Any of the three original Stooges albums would have been a great choice, though they all have been reissued to death.

Because the original is widely available for cheap (normally around $16 on amazon) and it's a AAA pressing by Rhino. Plus they did a RSD deluxe edition a couple years ago. There were actually some Cale mixes as bonus tracks on that edition.

They should have done the same thing and included both. That Raw Power double is still available for $24. If this is just a GZ cut of the Cale mix, it certainly is not essential to me when I have the Rhino of the normal mix (still available for $20) and it is excellent.

It's one thing for VMP to provide a reissue that already exists, but they really shouldn't be going up against any of the excellent Rhino reissues with the only difference being that it is an obscure mix and with VMP's record, probably worse mastering. If they went all analog and made it both mixes, it makes much more sense.
