No Buy Vinyl Support Thread

I like the idea of going through your collection alphabetically. After I get through the stack @blissfullychaotic (I promise I'm getting to it!) made for me, I think I'll embark on the journey myself. It should be somewhat feasible considering my collection is probably a lot smaller than other people on here.
I look forward to following along on your journey ~ Considering your write up for your AOTM I'm sure your going to introduce me to some new albums/artists I would otherwise overlook :)

Had my first withdrawal crisis yesterday. Driving aimlessly around town, approaching the local record store... I managed to drive by without stopping but it wasn’t easy. How long does it take to detox from compulsive record buying?
It gets easier. I promise. It took only a few weeks to get over FOMO for new stuff. It also helps that I don't follow the pre order or online deals threads. And then probably a few months to get over the need to go to a record store for used stuff. You can do it!!!

I'll def be needing this thread over the coming months. Budgetary restrictions means all frivolous spending needs to stop and sadly that includes records. I'm allowing myself 2 records this month (Lizzo and whatever wins AOTY at the grammys) and nothing else for the foreseeable future.

My main issue is that went ever I'm in a bad mood I always end up buying stuff to cheer me up. And in 2019 that was mainly records. Gonna have to cut that out but idk how

This also means I'm gonna be PIF'ing some stuff in the coming weeks. Stuff I bought and didnt need/never spin

Maybe you could set up a savings account and instead of buying records put the money into that and buy some ETF's (shares) when you have got say a $1000 in it and invest in your future . and watch it grow, I see you're only 23 so you should start now !

I actually have a decent savings account that built up from my last job. Last January I quit that job though so I could go to school full time again. I did spend this year as if I still had that job though and adding on top various bills that have accrued (paying for current college classes, old student loans, medical stuff from 2018 etc.) I spent way more than my current part time job can carry me. So yeah this year I'm planning to refill that account and get ready to have to pay off more student loans I gotta start taking out again

There you go, you have it all sorted !! Doesn't mean you can't buy the odd album, but seems you get caught up in all the FOMO bullshit and get stuff that you don't want/need. Do you have any streaming that you listen to or youtube where you can listen to stuff before you buy, or better yet instead of . I have virtually stopped buying new vinyl, the odd one here or there and a few s/hand , prices have gotten rediculous and I listen to a lot more on the computer now, Nothing will ever replace listening to a record but I have saved myself a shitload of money that I am now investing into income producing assets (i.e. Shares) for my families future .

Can i reset now ? In spirit i’m fully behind this idea, I just floated away on a sea of forgetfulness earlier.
Doesn’t help i’ve been staring at a huge Nick Cave Ghosteen Billboard for last 4 weeks as i get of train. Subliminally got me to buy it when billboard finally is replaced. “what’s missing this morning”.......

This is my new favorite thread. I've found myself gradually losing my enthusiasm for collecting. Too many headaches surrounding vinyl. Between the records damaged during shipping to bad presses it's such a crapshoot and not really worth it anymore. After a pretty expensive fall I haven't bought anything in months. Stuff I pre-ordered is still coming in though and it kind of reminds me of the problem I had.

I had a moment of weakness at B&N yesterday... got Peter Gabriel's UP that's been on my want-list for a long time, on the 50% off sale,
I did spin it when I got home, and enjoyed it a lot - so it wasn't an impulse buy and shelve. Still staying strong from any online buying.
Also sold a few records yesterday to work on space issues. So, progress...

I'll chime in. After spending way too much on the B&N sale I'm ready to take a break from vinyl too. I do have a 3 month VMP subscription going (with Bitte Orca on the way) and am also waiting on the new Chromatics album, which seems to have been delayed a couple of times. At this point I don't think I'd need to buy anything else until April when I usually pick up a few titles at the Coachella record store.

I'm not on a strict zero record diet but I was successfully jolted from my consumerism malaise a few weeks ago after a money scare, so I've had the clarity of mind to be a much more responsible record buyer. I had already been trending toward slowing down significantly, however, I have now been voraciously selling off portions of my collection that were previously deemed as "not for sale". It feels so good.
