Vinyl Me Please Classics

I don't know if it's going to be this track or another of the ROTMs, but I'd have Labi Siffre in my future if it's still around.
I too will be doing this. I think it will be instead of Essentials though as Dirty Projectors are not really my jam.
I will swap Herbie if there is a better option but I'm okay with keeping it

Ok so Herbie's move into the more heavy electronic/synth sound started in 1972 when he met Patrick Gleeson. Gleeson wasn't actually a jazz musician (I believe he had a doctorate in English and began experimenting with the Moog in the later 60's). So the first album to go down this path was 'Crossroads' in 1972. The reason I point this out is because the further we venture from this, the less 'Jazz' is seen as he attempts to blur the lines between genres.

So, Mr. Hands is deep in the electronic/fusion era BUT still maintains some level of recognizable jazz. Lite Me Up is perhaps 4-5 albums after BUT importantly has very little recognisable jazz, I would describe it as a disco album personally. If you listen to Future Shock, which was the next release after Lite Me Up, hes moved again to the pure electronic sound (you might be familiar with Rockit?).

The reason I would personally be annoyed if they went with Mr. Hands is because its not even an obscure album which best shows off Herbies work, imo. If they were looking for a pick which would be unexpected BUT shows off Herbies talents then I think Mwandishi would have been a cool pick. Its an era which really really influenced him, he became an activist after forming the band, a vegan, later a Buddist, and claims that a a live show from that time produced the greatest music he had ever created.

I have Crossroads and really like it. What else from that period would you recommend? Aside from Mwandishi, which looks cool-- although not suuuper cheap, still reasonable though.

Oh, it's definitely going to be Dirty Projectors as my swap if that's the selection over there. Any Herbie above that for me.

I actually dig Mr. Hands. Its not even a top 10 album of his, but its pretty funky and is one of his better albums of that time period at the very least. 'Textures' is also one of his better tracks, period.

I'll probably keep Classics and Essentials and swap RHH for one of the Stax I haven't bought yet.

FWIW, Ray Charles was pressed at Rainbo...and likely one of the last runs before they closed shop. I'd be hesitant to go for that until some reviews start coming in. Quality out of Rainbo has been disastrous for years. No clue what their last projects will look like
Might have to take that chance. I got Etta Jones from them last month and it honestly sounds fantastic. Labels off center though lol

Yeah, this was not the Herbie I was hoping for from Classics (that was My Point of View), but the silver lining is...

My Point of View is getting a Tone Poet reissue on Aug. 28th, so I'll just be patient. Tone Poet's are a better product than Classics anyway.
And Herbie's The Prisoner is getting the Tone Poet treatment in March, and hopefully 1 or 2 more get the MMJ SRX treatment for 2020.

Where are you getting those release dates from? I love tone poets, some of the best pressings in my collection. Do you have a link?

Sextant is the last album before he changes direction again, the next one is Head Hunters, so try Sextant and see what you think.

Wow that is an amazing lineup. Part 1 of Joe Henderson, 2 Bobby Hutcherson albums, Herbie, another Tina Brooks, Grant Green, Paul Chambers...

My wallet is already crying.

I had the same reaction. I know I will be getting every one of these releases (I have all the current Tone Poets except Cassandra Wilson, just not a fan of the album).

There's a good chance that I cancel VMP all together (or everything but Classics) in the new year so this is where my money will be going :)
