Vinyl Me Please Classics

Classics is gonna be Blues, Jazz or Soul (or some variation on those like funk, salsa, gospel, etc). Country stuff will be Essentials when they do "vinyl me partner"

If it's Motown, Where Did Our Love Go was the biggest Motown album of '64, but I figure that might be in the anthology no?

I would love this. Seems silly to relegate this to a box if that's true, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I never want VMP to do a country or a bluegrass record for Classics! NEVER!!!!!! 🙅‍♂️🤧
I've been surprised that the classic country that has shown up has been Essentials but I didn't realize that the description of the subs was so specific. I understand that there are people that don't dig country but I would be happy if some really, really choice country selections where given the Classics treatment.

Correct. The thought is disc 3 of the Anthology is Where Did Our Love Go. We'll find out next week.

Have you heard that Doc Watson record? Might not sound like what you're thinking of. If you like stripped down blues, you should check it out.

At Folsom Prison is also incredible.
Doc is not bluegrass. He gets stereotyped into that genre, bc of his siblings and his circle. He's not for everybody, but I bet @NathanRicaud there is an artist you are completely into that is influenced by his songwriting.

Storf gave a Classics stock update over on reddit:

SWF >>Donald Byrd > James Booker >>>> Sister Rosetta > Isley Brothers > Nat Turner > Eddie Floyd > Darrell Banks > Willie Bobo > Little Milton > Koko Taylor > Art Blakey > The Lightmen > William Bell > Lafayette Afro Rock Band > Alice Coltrane > Al Green > Archie Shepp

No love for SWF :( :( :(
Looks like Shepp, Green, and Coltrane are all sold out now.

Either of those would be an amazing get. Selfishly I have beat up copies ready to be replaced! MJH is the best human.

I have Immortal, which has a VG+ surface but has a lot of crap in the pressing, probably cheap recycled vinyl. I've seen this album and Today a few more times all with this same crap all over the surface, so I've been holding out for a cleaner looking copy to float my way. I would love a good reissue!

I might actually favor the 60s MJH records to the original recordings, the added roughness to his voice really sell the songs better IMO.

yes. Folk.

I saw him perform twice. Guy was so blind, had to be escorted on stage. But you can damn well believe he knew where the strings were.

Nice, never got to see him perform. My Dad's family is from NC and they saw him and Merle a few times. Guess the live recordings will have to do it for me!

In terms of Classics Guess Thread:

On Reddit, Storf said, Classics hadn't been guessed yet, so that eliminates:

Sam Cooke - Ain't That Good News
Jan Johansson - Jazz På Svenska
John Fahey - Death Chants, Breakdowns & Military Waltzes
Johnny Cash - I Walk the Line
Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder
Herbie Hancock - Empyrean Isles
James Brown - Grits and Soul
Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch
Dexter Gordon - A Swingin' Affair
Kenny Dorham - Una Mas
Freddie Hubbard - Body & Soul
Getz/Gilberto
Andrew Hill - Judgement!
Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells - Together
Mary Wells- Sings My Guy
Ray Barretto - Guajira Y Guaguanco
Four Tops - Four Tops
Otis Redding - Pain In My Heart
(Might be some I've missed, I loathe Reddit)

I asked if "Is Classics from a label you've done an Anthology of?", to which his response was: "Good question. Not gonna answer it, but good, nonetheless."

I'll take that as it's likely from Motown. So my new guess is: The Temptations - Meet the Temptations
