Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Boatman’s Call

One time when I was living in St Louis, I went to a record store and went through where the “CAG…” records would be, several times before asking someone if they had any Nick Cage records.

“Uh no, does he have a record out?” they ask.
“Ummm, yeah, a whole bunch. That’s kind of his thing…” I respond.
We both look at each other silently, thinking the other is the biggest dumbass. Turns out I was the dumbass.

Play anything this movie brings to mind.

The movie coined the phrase "Yodas 'n shit" - which my brother and I used often while growing up for random things.

Day 20

So this was the first Johnny Cash anything I ever owned. I bought it at a yard sale one summer when I was staying with my grandfather. He has a habit of being late everywhere usually because he got sidetracked by a yard sale.

Much to my surprise when I got home, the record inside was this:

Johnny Cash - Greatest Hits

I think I might have gotten the better end of this deal.

Anyhow… The One on the Right is the One on the Left is the first time I ever heard a funny song from the guy who might be just as well known for doing Boy Named Sue and other funny songs as he is for Folsom Prison Blues.

This record was the genesis of a very long fandom with the Man in Black. It also taught me a valuable lesson in checking the record you are buying, although these days if I’m buying used I’m trying to figure out if it will play well more than I am verifying it is the record I think it is.

Edit: don’t need the Johnny Cash volume of the time life series any more (I own those songs on vinyl or cd at this point) but I do have The Statler Brothers and Mel Tillis volumes and wouldn’t mind picking up a few more some day.

I haven't watched the movie in years...I don't even remember the plot.

As an aside - any movie with John Malkovich reminds me that he is from a small town in Southern Illinois, which surprises people.

And it seemed real. It seemed like us, and it seemed like, well, our home. If not Arizona, then a land not too far away, where all parents are strong and wise and capable, and all children are happy and beloved. I don't know. Maybe it was Utah.”

Raising Arizona is my all-time favorite film.
