Welcome to the February 2024 Record Challenge Thread – Silver Screen Edition Part Deux!

I had another idea I was going to run with, but I had so many unused movies on the list from last year I decided to take it further and deeper this year. This year’s list, like last year’s, isn’t ranked in any way. I’m just kinda riffing on some favorites of mine and hopefully yours.

The “rules” are typical: Play an album that goes with the prompt. Or you can play the soundtrack to the movie, or play an album with a song from the movie, or make your own connection to the prompt and post away. Have fun with it. Try not to repeat, but there are no penalties, and there are no limitations on the type of media that can be posted – cassettes, CDs, streams are all fine as usual.

Also, I’d love to hear if you’ve seen the movie, if you like the movie, or any other feedback you have.

I’ll post seven per week, except the final week of the month I’ll post eight. (It’s a leap year)

Also, fyi; I’ll be out of town for the beginning of the month, so after Friday I won’t be checking back in until mid-week next week.

Get yer records and your popcorn and enjoy the show!

The Princess Bride
Miracle Max: "Have fun storming the castle!"

When I did the first version of this challenge last year, in hindsight I couldn't believe I didn't have this movie in my first 30 choices. This is one of the best (and most quotable) movies ever. I went with the castle quote because it's probably the one my wife and I use most. But there are SO many others.

Play something about castles or with medieval leanings
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind.

Friday February 2nd
Groundhog Day

Phil: "Well it's groundhog day....again."

Fitting for this day on the calendar.

Play one of your most spun records, whether currently or all-time
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind.

Saturday February 3rd
Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump: "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get"

I figured it was either that quote or Run, Forrest!

Play an eclectic album or a compilation
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind.

Sunday February 4th
Psycho
Norman Bates: "We all go a little mad sometimes, haven't you?"

My wife has actually never seen this movie, so it's going on the 'watch soon' list, as I could use a rewatch too.

Play something by an artist with a certain madness about them

OR

Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind

Monday February 5th
Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Ferris Bueller: "Live moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in awhile, you might miss it."

The iconic line from the iconic movie. I just recently watched a fan theory video that postulates that Cameron is the center of the film, and Ferris is a figment of his imagination. It's the Ferris Fight Club Theory.

Play something you'd spin if you decided to shirk any Monday responsibilities you have/play hooky
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind.
.

Tuesday February 6th
The Player

Griffin Mills: "I was just thinking what an interesting concept it is to eliminate the writer from the artistic process"

I played the crap out of my VHS copy of this, not sure I've seen it since those days, maybe worth a re-watch.

'I was just thinking what an interesting concept it is to eliminate the writer from the...' - The Player

Play something by an artist or album you like, but wish had better writing
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind.

Wednesday February 7th
Best in Show

Harlan Pepper (quoting his mother) "Would you stop namin' nuts!"

I'm always amazed and entertained by Christopher Guest; how well he just melts into the characters he plays is just fantastic

Play something that has a lot of different pressings
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind.

Sorry for the delay!

Thursday February 8th
Meet the Parents

Gaylord Focker - "Jack, I don't know what we're talking about"

I remember being surprised at how much I liked this at first viewing.

Play an album that is in a different language than your own
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind

Friday February 9th
That Thing You Do!

Radio DJ - "Here's something new. A local Erie band's got a new record out. Just won the Mercyhurst talent show a few weeks ago. THis is Erie's own OOOOneders!"

It's definitely a special feeling when you hear your own music on the radio for the first time.

Play a debut
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind

Saturday February 10th
Punch Drunk Love

Barry - "I Sometimes cry a lot..."

This might be a top three choice for PTA movies for me.

Play something that stirs up emotion
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind

Sunday February 11th
National Lampoon's Vacation

Clark Griswald: I think you're all fucked in the head. We're ten hours from the fuckin' fun park and you want to bail out! Well I'll tell you something, this is no longer a vacation. It's a quest. It's a quest for fun! I'm gonna have fun, and you're gonna have fun. We're all gonna have so much fuckin' fun we'll need plastic surgery to remove our goddamn smiles! You'll be whistling 'Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah' out of your assholes! Hahaha. I gotta be crazy, I'm on a pilgrimage to see a moose! Praise Marty Moose! Holy shit!

Another super-quotable movie...but I went with Clark losing it.

Play something fucking fun!
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind

Monday February 12th
Dazed and Confused
Cynthia: I call it the "every other decade" theory. The 50's were boring. The 60's rocked. The 70's, my god, they obviously suck. So maybe the 80s will be like, radical. I figure we'll be in our 20's and hey, it can't get any worse.

Maybe not a great movie, but super watchable.

Play something from whatever your favorite decade of the four mentioned is.
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind

Tuesday February 13
The Simpsons Movie

Bart: Ohhh, this is the worst day of my life.
Homer: The worst day of your life so far

I use this quote so often

The Worst Day of Your Life So Far....

Super Troopers

  • Police Chief Grady: Desperation is a stinky cologne.

I loved this movie. I had high hopes for The Broken Lizard guys after this, but aside from Beerfest being mildly funny nothing else ever came close to this.

Play an album you were desperate to get
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind

Friday February 16th
Good Will Hunting

  • Sean: [during a therapy session] You're not perfect, sport, and let me save you the suspense: this girl you've met, she's not perfect either. But the question is whether or not you're perfect for each other.

Another one my wife has never seen. I might be able to handle another viewing of this.

Play something about sex or food
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind

Sunday February 18th
Shrek

Donkey: And in the morning, I'm making waffles!"

I haven't seen many of the Pixar Dreamworks Universe films, but this one is pretty awesome imo.

Play something to go with Sunday breakfast
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind

Monday February 19th
The Blues Brothers

  • Elwood: What kind of music do you usually have here?
  • Claire: Oh, we got both kinds. We got country *and* western.

I remember when I was young wondering how many cop cars they wrecked in the filming of this movie

Play some country OR western.
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind

Tuesday February 20th
Raising Arizona

  • Evelle: [about the balloons he just bought] These blow up into funny shapes at all?

For some reason that line kills me. Granted, there are dozens more of really funny quotes and moments in this film.

Raising Arizona- These blow up into any funny shapes at all?

Play something funny
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind

Wednesday February 21st

The lingo is great, and I always love Edward Norton. There's a love story in there that I'm guessing nobody cares about.

Rounders - Pay that man his money

Play something about winning

Say Anything

  • Lloyd Dobler: I got a question. If you guys know so much about women, how come you're here at like the Gas 'n' Sip on a Saturday night completely alone drinking beers with no women anywhere?
  • Joe: By choice, man.

Not a huge rom-com fan, but it's hard to argue that this is a great one.

Play something that provides sage advice
OR
Play anything this quote or movie brings to mind

Sunday February 25th
The 'Burbs

  • Mark Rumsfield: There go the Goddamn brownies!

I love this movie. Everyone knows this one right? If not, watch it! (and ignore Corey Feldman)

Play an artist or album you feel is underground or underappreciated

Killers of the Flower Moon

  • Minnie: [on Ernest] He wants our money.
  • Mollie Burkhart: Of course he wants money. But he also wants to be settled. He's not restless.
  • Reta: His uncle has money. It's not money he wants. He loves you.

Since I just watched this at the end of January, I'll throw it in. I am already looking forward to another viewing.

Play something about money or deceit.

I adore this movie, I think it's fairly off the radar. Has anyone seen this?

Fully agree. One of my favorite movies of all time. The supporting cast stole the show, of course. Wallace Shawn is also a really great person to boot, which makes his villiany all the more fun.

Love this film, my kids love this film, and I even managed to use this meme when I first presented in the company boardroom

This album reminds me of a time in my life not too long after I'd moved to my city, hanging out in a couple of clubs and bars down the road where things like this were played, and some of the crew I hung with went on to make all sort of incredbile stuff, some of which I'm fairly sure people here would know ...

Damn I love this. Any of you haven't checked this out, if you like funk and raw guitars, this could be right up your alley. Like a mix of songs reminiscent of the Better Call Saul theme, raw Baby Huey type songs and some El Michels Affair soulful instrumentals.

Day 1: The Princess Bride

I'm actually not familiar with this movie at all, outside of the clip where Wallace Shawn's character drops dead. Instead of playing an album having to do with royalty or castles (of which I have very few), I decided to do some six degrees of separation.

I mostly know Wallace Shawn as Rex from Toy Story, but he also voiced the Principal in A Goofy Movie, a film which also featured an MJ/Prince parody called Powerline, voiced by...
