July 2021 Vinyl Spin Challenge: Summer Breeze Makes Me Feel Fine

It’s not an official copy but it really sounds quite good. I think I grabbed a copy for around $30. It looks like they have gone up since them but still may be worth it as I doubt it will every be reissued with full samples and the OG prices won’t be coming down anytime soon.

Herbie Hancock - The Piano

Herbie Hancock is one of the very few artists with huge discographies that I’ll probably end up owning a copy of every one of their albums. Even the bad ones. The Piano is one of the good ones though. And this being a part of the VMP Anthology set is what suckered me into getting it.

July 21 - Lollapalooza (Vancouver 1992)
Play a band that you love seeing play live

I saw a buncha Lollapaloozas and the 1992 version was arguably the best.

Pretty ridiculously great lineup...
Lush
The Jesus And Mary Chain (my guys...)
Pearl Jam
Ice Cube
Soundgarden
Ministry
Red Hot Chili Peppers (not my guys...)

I lived an hour and a half away from the venue and in '92 I was home by 11PM. I have never been a Chili Peppers fan and cut out after one song. I actually felt sorry for them having to follow Ministry. Good God - what a powerful performance Al and the boys put on. They had rolling voodoo mic stands, a crowd incited to start multiple fires and songs to play from an incredibly strong record (Psalm 69). All the Peppers had were fire helmets, socks for their dicks and weaker material.

There were many highlights this day, but seeing as it was Chris Cornell's birthday yesterday, I'll focus on Soundgarden. They played a short but lethal set. Pulled out Cop killer in support of Body Count. Pretty great. I also got a fringe benefit from bailing on the Peppers when I stopped at a Wilco station close to the venue for supplies for the ride home. I was browsing around and who walks in but Kim Thayill and Matt Cameron. Kim was amazed he could find King Dons, a cream filled chocolate covered cupcake thingie, in North Carolina. Hey, guitar gods love their Hostess snacks too. He looked at some bootleg looking country cassettes near the check out counter and bought a couple. My friend I was with was working at a record store at the time and he had some Badmotorfinger promotional flats in his trunk. I got one signed by Kim. Pic below.

I recorded most bands that day. I had economy equipment and didn't go out of my way to try too hard but things came out marginally listenable nonetheless. Enjoy Soundgarden performing 'Slaves & Bulldozers.

RIP Chris. Thanks for everything...

Saw the Vancouver stop (hence the Challenge for today). It was my 2nd date with my future wife, with our first date being MBV a couple of weeks earlier.

Like you I don’t remember anything about RHCP and pretty sure we left before they started. My apartment was at the time was a nice short 30min ride from the venue at UBC. Though never liked festival concerts and still don’t.

All Time Low - MTV Unplugged

I've posted a few of my favorite bands to see live lately, so I'm going to throw this one back. Back in high school and college my now wife and I went to see All Time Low anytime they were in town. And since they're from Baltimore and we live in Maryland, we saw them quite a bit haha. We haven't seen them live in many years but we've seen them double digit times and always had so much fun at their shows. They bring so much energy and the back and forth banter was always hilarious.

So I have two Norah Jones Live Albums I'm dying to play but, if I'm being honest, there's another artist in my "to play" stack that fits better.

My mother and I have a small handful of artists we see together. She's not a big music head and most of her music that she does like is just off of the chart from what I listen to: lots of mainstream 90s country and classic rock. With that said, I was also a huge loner as a teen and early on in college so my mother accompanied me to a lot of shows. She was a real trooper.

With that said, when you do that, there's a few musicians whose shows we walked out of and both gushed over. One was Fitz and the Tantrums, just an insanely strong live show that she'll now go see without me (RUDE) and she's turned her best friend on to as well. Another one is this woman.

I remember the first time we saw her together. I grabbed a couple spots at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in NH - GA Standing in a heat filled room over the seven feet of shoreline we have in New Hampshire. I don't remember much about the show before Brandi got on stage. We staked a spot near the exit doors where the smokers hung out and she walked on stage with her band...and she blew the roof off the joint. Like, I could tell by her album she has a great voice, but it was taken up another notch live and imbued with so much emotion and power that the crowd was stunned silent...until she decided to rock out and the crowd followed her like the pied piper. She also had a great tendency of ending the set with a great cover or two to send the crowd home even happier. We've seen her a few times sine then. I also brought my GF to see Jason Isbell and her several years later, another amazing show, and the next morning she said she loved me.

Brandi Carlile will always have a soft spot with me. Given the new album being announced today, let's play where it all started for me. (Yes playing Benaroya would make more sense but I just got this one so...)

I grew up revering Lollapalooza as the pinnacle of live music but unfortunately by the time I was old enough to actually attend in the late 90s the touring festival was on it’s last leg before the concert was discontinued completely. I was really excited about the relaunch and in 2003 though the lineup was a bit more mainstream than I would have expected based on Lolla’s storied past. It wasn’t the best festival but it wasn’t terrible either. The highlights being a reunited Jane’s Addiction, Jurassic Five, Cave In (remember them?), The Donnas, The Distillers, and probably the best performance of the festival, Queens Of The Stone Age. This touring lineup didn’t do as well as promoters had hoped and was likely the catalyst for organizer to decide to follow Coachella and Bonnaroo’s lead by converting the festival in to a stationary event every summer in Grant Park. I never managed to attend a Lollapalooza after the change. By that time The Intonation festival launched in 2005 which led to the creation for the annual Union Park, Pitchfork Music Festival,a festival I attended every year until we move out West in 2012. The running snark at that point was why pay $300 to go to Lolla this year when you could pay $100 (to go to Pitchfork) and see who would be playing Lolla the next year.

Sadly, Lolla seems to be kinda of joke at this point basically a festival created so people can post selfie’s and tiktok videos. This year’s lineup is especially terrible (Limp Bizkit and Journey should be playing State Fairs at this point in their career, not a major American music festival, but I digress)

Here’s the show I attended…

And here is a good article I just read, ranking all the past Lollapalooza’s via Consequence Of Sound…

Pinback - Summer in Abaddon

Rob Crow and Armistead Burwell Smith IV always deliver, no matter what version of their musical output I see live I always leave feeling satisfied. But Pinback shows are a step above most of their acts. The sound fills every inch of your body. It sucks how hard of a time they've had making a living at music since they've put out so many amazing albums, but these days it takes more marketing than talent. If you've never seen them live and they go on tour again, don't sleep on it.

LOL! You copied my customized title for your post. Also, this is a killer album.

Play a white whale.

Elliott Smith - Figure 8

Both this and XO had me frustrated when I first got into vinyl because the pressings all had dismal reviews, and I even tried and returned XO a few times on Amazon, but the copies I got were pop-riddled, staticky messes. Then I stumbled upon a listing that include both albums together in their Bong Load anniversary presses, which I got and am happy to say, while not perfect, sound pretty good.
