Jazz

I picked up the BN-80 Robert Glasper Canvas and John Scofield Hand Jive for less than 10 bucks a piece on Deep Discount Now I'm in a rabbit hole thinking of grabbing at least one BN-80 release a month. I've heard they are all really good but which ones stand out as must haves. Right now I'm really digging Lonnie Smith Think, so I think I'm going to grab that next.
Pete La Roca - Basra is a must have.

I don't have the BN80 but have heard good things. It was one of my favorite discoveries from checking out MM titles and may be my favorite of the Tone Poet/BN80 selections.

Basra is magnificent! I love that one so much as well! And you can't forget Art Blakey's Indestructible @Rahawk2 ! That one is an absolute classic! Indestructible is such a fun listen! 💎

The Blakey is awesome, I’ve heard that one a few times . I finished that Bobbi Humphrey and it was simply beautiful it rocketed to the top of my soon to purchase queue, thanks for all the recommendations. So far the ones I,be listened to have all been fantastic Are there any in this series that aren’t so great?

Can you point me to this sale? Are you talking about DeepDiscount.com or something else? Thanks!

I just grabbed Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue DOL pressing (Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue) for $16 on Amazon. It sounds very good, especially considering the price. I wasn't real keen on splurging on the $55 AP version even though I do really love this album.

Does anyone else have the DOL press?

yes it was deepdiscounts.com but it looks like they both sold out fast. I saw it on Reddit R/vinyldeals but they went quick. They often have good stuff in their bargin bins if you periodically check I also got Joshua Redman Come What May for 6 bucks but it oversold and they refunded.( Even though it's back in stock at $21 (They do that often it's annoying) There is a 15 percent off code if you type in ENJOY though

To be honest DOL should be avoided where possible (same with Waxtime if you ever come across them). They are a 'grey market' label which tends to use poor quality source files. Interestingly, the Kenny Burrell you picked up has good reviews so looks like you managed to dodge the bullet here.

A bit of a double-post with the "What's Spinning" thread.

Nathan Davis - Peace Treaty

To any of you jazz buffs who haven't gotten your hands on a Sam Records title, I add my voice to the chorus of praise for these audiophile offerings. In this case, the sound is alive on a background so quiet the instruments are completely suspended in space. Davis is superb, but the piano, oh, it's incredible. Rene Urtreger is the pianist, a name I've never heard (which isn't necessarily saying much), and that's part of the fun of these records--they tend to be from recordings of individuals and groups beyond the lineups that have become typical for me with so much focus on the Blue Note label. Needles to say (but I'll say it anyway), highly recommended.

Yep absolutely fantastic album and flawless release. The live Nathan Davis album is great too.

Thanks. Yeah, that seems to be the case as I did my research in advance. Discogs reviews of Midnight Blue were mostly positive which was why I figured it was worth the $16 flier.

But good to know about DOL for the future

This might have been discussed already, but I just got through watching this fantastic interview with Joe Harley from a few weeks ago. Towards the end he lists out a few of the Tone Poet releases which he will be working on for a 2021 release (Link Here). I know a couple have already been mentioned, so here's a bit more info.

Dexter Gordon - One Flight Up (One of the early releases in the 2021 calendar)
Andrew Hill - Passing Ships (Might be a double record due to there being a lot of extra material)
Joe Pass - Django

He also hinted that they will be releasing some of the albums from the Transition label (which will no doubt be amazing).

Have this stuck in my head today and I ain’t complainin’

I actually enjoyed playing this in marching band many moons ago

Well this is exciting, Resonance Records have announced their new RSD 2020 release (on top of their repressing of the Bill Evan's album). Looks like a good one as well!

SONNY ROLLINS on RESONANCE! Coming November 27th for
Record Store Day
Black Friday. I'm honored and thrilled to announce "Rollins in Holland: The 1967 Studio & Live Recordings," Resonance Records' first archival release from the Saxophone Colossus himself, SONNY ROLLINS. Released in partnership with the
Nederlands Jazz Archief
, this limited-edition 180g 3LP set (mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, pressed at RTI) and deluxe 2CD set (out Dec 4) is officially sanctioned by Rollins and is comprised of 3 different previously-unissued performances with bassist Ruud Jacobs and drummer
Han Bennink
in May of 1967 at VARA Studio 5 in Hilversum, the Arnhem Academy of Visual Arts in Arnhem, and audio from a televised performance at the Go-Go Club in Loosdrecht.
"Rollins in Holland" will include an extensive, over-the-top 100-page CD booklet and 24-page LP insert with a treasure trove of never-before-published photos from the actual performances, and essays by yours truly, Aidan Levy (currently writing a biography of Sonny Rollins for Da Capo Press) and my co-producer, the Dutch jazz journalist/producer Frank Jochemsen. I had the pleasure of speaking with Sonny for a wide-ranging interview, which will be included in the booklet, along with an interview Aidan had with Han Bennink and Ruud Jacobs at Ruud's home in 2018.
In my interview with Sonny, he said: "I’m so happy that Resonance is putting it out because it really represents a take-no-prisoners type of music. That’s sort of what I was doing around that period of time; that was sort of Sonny Rollins then . . . It was very much me. And I loved it and I loved playing with those guys."
There are many, many thank yous in order for this incredible project. I want to start by thanking George Klabin, as always, for his generosity and passion for making this the greatest Sonny Rollins package possible. This project also wouldn't have been possible without the support of Sonny's long-time publicist (and associate producer on this release), Terri Hinte. I'm so grateful for her support and everything she does for jazz. A special thanks goes to my co-producers Frank Jochemsen, who discovered the VARA Studio and Go-Go Club recordings in the Nederlands Jazz Archief archives, and David Weiss, who was a tremendous asset working with our engineers George Klabin and Fran Gala. I also want to thank the other 2 associate producers on the project, Resonance production manager and my right-hand Zak Shelby-Szyszko and Resonance General counsel and album package editor, John Koenig. Kudos as well to our über talented designer John Sellards for delivering another absolutely stunning cover and package.
Finally, I want to thank Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton from Record Store Day for their continued support in making these releases possible. More info at ResonanceRecords.org

My copy of Joe Harriott ‎– Chronology (Live 1968-69) arrived today and it looks fantastic. I will listen to it in the evening but from first glance its clear that a lot of care went into it. I love the old style flipback cover and I was excited to see Tubby Hayes features on a few tracks as well.

@britprogjazz I saw you mentioned that the tapes for the Michael Garrick were obtained from Ernie Garside and that he recorded every performance there. This honesty excites me more than anything because I love live jazz and some of the names they had play at Club 43 is incredible. Are there plans to dig into these archives for more releases in the future? I know Sonny Rollins and Johnny Griffin played there in the 60's.
Hope you're enjoying the Harriott. Many thanks for the positive feedback! means a lot. ;-) No more Ernie Garside at the mo, too many legal hurdles regarding issuing stuff which features well known American players. We got blocked from releasing something recently. Shame beccause it's fantastic but the estate said no so that's the end of that.
We do have this coming out soon though. a must for Joe Harriott/Denis Preston fans, indeed Brit jazz fans in general....
