Best Music of 2019

I hadn't heard the Jai Paul leaks until last night when he released them officially. Absolutely addicting. Probably my AOTY at the moment even though the content is from 2013ish.

I'm not sure about AOTY or even Top 10 for me but I was truly impressed. I had never heard Jai Paul before and was certain that he was being overhyped but turns out the music delivered on the hype.

Stereogums best albums of the year so far

#1 is a joke right? I didnt think people felt that strongly about it.

I do love that Megan is on here and Tyler isnt.

I'm not a fan but from what I've seen online, those who love it all have it as their favorite album of the year so far.

Her new album is on NPR's First Listen:

This was my first exposure to her, outside of unknowingly hearing her in that CIC track. This is super good. Going down the Let Them Eat Chaos rabbit hole now. How is she not better known?!
She’s pretty well known in some circles. She’s won a Ted Hughes award for her first book. I’d recommend all her albums and books.

6 months in, and already it has been a great year for music. Better than last year (which for me was just “fine”). It’s going to be difficult to narrow it down in December!

My favourites so far (in no particular order):

  • The National - I Am Easy to Find
  • SVE - Remind Me Tomorrow
  • Julia Jacklin - Crushing
  • Vampire Weekend - Father of the Bride
  • Kishi Bashi - Omoiyari
  • The Comet is Coming - Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery
  • Laura Stevenson - The Big Freeze
  • Lizzo - Cuz I Love You
  • Aldous Harding - Designer
  • Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
  • Jamila Woods - Legacy!Legacy!
  • Better Oblivion Community Center - S/T
  • Dave - Psychodrama
  • Operators - Radiant Dawn
  • Daniel Norgren - Wooh Dang
  • BSS - Let’s Try the After
  • Durand Jones and the Indications - American Love Call
  • Eerie Wanda - Pet Town

That new Big Thief album is good but it's nowhere near as good as the hype it's getting. Every time I see a publication giving it massive acclaim I scratch my head and I think "Am I missing something?" It's a solid 6/10 album and nothing more IMO.

I was never a fan of their other stuff so I haven't listened to it yet even though I get told to almost weekly.

I may make one of these lists after this month is over (there are some releases still to come in June that I'm looking forward to, including Titus Andronicus and Raconteurs), but I think Jenny Lewis is in pole position for me right now.

I posted about this in the music news/reviews thread this morning, but everyone here should check out the new Stef Chura if you haven't already.

I saw some folks on Stereogum praise that one, I listened to half of it only via Spotify free on shuffle so it was all out of order. I need to get my hands on the mp3s so I can give it a proper listen. It's decent from what I heard.
