August 2020 Challenge Thread - The Dog Days of Vinyl Playing

12 - Appreciation

Off the listening shelf come this gem that does it all. Ostentatious color. Different track sequence to fit the format. Different versions than other formats just because. Controversial direction for an indie darling. Quality mastering. Picture label. Download card. Flat wax. Gatefold sleeve (not that I ever see the inside of those). What box isn’t checked here?

Day 12: Vinyl Record Day - Play an album that makes you appreciate the vinyl format.
Pavement - Crooked Rain Crooked Rain

Vinyl records are the perfect culminations of two of my lifelong obsessions; music and collecting. I have loved music my entire life but records add a collecting element that is not present in other media, chasing limited editions and specific pressings could be seen as a headache to some but for me it’s half the fun. For example Crooked Rain Crooked Rain I initially purchased a cheapo copy that was perfectly serviceable back when I first started collecting and I was happy with that... Until I learned of an 2007 RTI Pressed 180 gram Pressing cut by Kevin Gray version existed it then became a collecting goal to acquire this version at a reasonable price (which I recently did a couple months ago after a few years of looking). I have always been a collector, initially of Basketball Cards, Then Comic Books and now Records, vinyl scratches that itch AND allows me to enjoy my other passion, music. What more could I ask for?

billy woods - Terror Management

One of the main reasons I enjoy collecting albums is the tangible artwork and bonus tidbits. This special edition of this album came with a lyric book that is extra special because woods added his own handwritten notes in the margins.

Day 11:
An album I got as a gift:
Various Artists - Steven Universe Movie Soundtrack
Got this as a gift from my girlfriend who I introduced the show to, she was really proud of this one!

Day 12:
An album that makes you appreciate vinyl:
Brockhampton - Ginger
The album itself isn’t what makes me appreciate vinyl as a medium. What does though, is the extra fan booklet that came with it. During the pre-order period for this one, fans were asked to enter their name in a text box so they’d be added to a booklet that would be bundled with the album. So, every name in this book contains the name of another fan who pre-ordered the vinyl alongside you. Always though this was a really unique idea that made me appreciate a big part of collecting records: the community.

Day 13:
An album that’s scary:
Slipknot - Iowa
To us that listen to Slipknot often, this album isn’t that scary. But to those that are uninitiated, this album is loud, distorted and disturbing to listen to.
(Also yes this is a bootleg)

Day 12 - Vinyl record day

This is probably the Dylan LP with most interesting instrumentation (Lanois), so I figured it would benefit a lot from the Mofi/45 RPM treatment. Unsurprisingly, it does. I’m a pretty cheap guy, but I’m willing to splurge if I think it will improve my appreciation of the music.

Day 12

VINYL

I’m a music junkie, always have been. Ever since I can remember. Vinyl has intensified this. I’m lucky enough to have an amazing wife who puts up with it. Who has let the setup and collection takeover a living room. Who has let the jazz collection and cleaning have a home in the guest bedroom. It’s not just records, I mean I’m a collector... there are a lot of comics here and lots of books.

music is the thing that grounds me and I’m passionate about and insatiable. The guys here have helped me appreciate it more @HiFi Guy’s great advice, @AnthonyI ’s pragmatism, @Woob_woob’s statistical approach to the hive mind, @NathanRicaud and @Teeeee’s enthusiasm, @David A.and @mcherry’s knowledge bombs.... @frtizg’s search for pedigree have affected my collection, my listening habits and my set up and desires. I still can’t stop buying things like Phoebe Bridgers and Angel Olsen that May disappoint me because the medium is fickle. But there’s those moments like being a lifelong Johnny Cash fan and hearing things in recordings that you know better than the back of your hand that you’ve never heard before. It’s a balance I’ll never get right, it’s maddening, frustrating and absolutely exhilarating.

August 12 - Vinyl Record Day - Play an album that makes you appreciate the vinyl format.

Vinyl was my first format, then there were cassetes, then CDs, but Ive always kept my collection.
Admittedly it exploded when it vinyl came back (was it ever gone really?). I couldn't be happier.

Day 12: - Vinyl Appreciation Day

I do like that we get releases on this format that wouldn't otherwise be released in a physical media. The original pressing of this soundtrack is one of my favorites, but this reissue does a much better job overall. The bigger artwork, die-cut jacket, 2 x 45 RPM, colored vinyl (if that's your thing), expanded soundtrack etc...

Now...most of this can be possible on CD, but not really to the extent that it is done on this medium.

Various ‎– Manhunter (Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Waxwork Records ‎– WW039, 1986/2018

Red Marbled "Red Dragon" variant

I also think this movie is my favorite of all the "Lecktor" movies...and why I hate Red Dragon so much.

Posting this one a few minutes early as I need a nap before the puppy wakes up....

Day 13: For Hitchcock...

I think Psycho is my favorite Hitchcock movie...but I've also put Vertigo in there, as well as North By Northwest.

Love that trailer. It's right up there for me with Hitchcock too but think Vertigo is my favourite.
