Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

Man I remember the 90s. If you hated a song you were stuck leaving the tv and radio off until it ran its course.

Maybe I’m just good at tuning out things I don’t want to pay attention to…
I don't think I've ever heard any T Swift song all the way through - with the exception of the 1989 album covered by Ryan Adams and the first album she did with Aaron Dessner - I think it's called Folklore? All I remember about it is that I bought a lilac purple pressing as it's my fave color. I listened to it exactly once. I have also heard the duet she does with Matt Berninger on The National's "First Two Pages..." album, but it's easy to avoid as I can skip it on Spotify, and it's track 1 side 2 on the LP, so I start playing track 2.

That said, even though I have absolutely no interest in her music (or most pop music for that matter) it is impossible to avoid the media coverage of her. Yes, I roll my eyes when it's on tv or scroll past on twitter etc. I don't hate her, I don't think I truly hate her music, it's just that I am beyond ambivalent enough to even give it a listen.

It's very difficult to ignore the coverage of her: when Jack Antonoff got married last year, the wedding was on the Jersey Shore, and the swifties found out and swarmed the venue and pretty much shut down a few blocks. That shit is terrifying. I can't imagine being in the public eye like that.

Didn’t she date someone vaguely famous for playing the roid ball? And married a movie star. And if she had a single out it was on the radio and the tv and so was much harder to ignore because you didn’t have 1000+ channels of each and an unlimited repository of music and tv in your pocket?

Tabloid culture has always been shit so I’ve always ignored it.
I think she dated A Rod but it was long after her hey day.

Yeah the politics and sports things aren't something she asked for. As far as I know she's done one interview about the whole thing which was with Time who bestowed an award on her. She's a lightning rod on those two subjects because her boyfriend takes money for promoting a Covid vaccine and that rubs some morons the wrong way. She also is treading into man territory with NFL fans and they are almost as big of gatekeepers as music snobs.

I'm going to chime in here but first some context: I do not listen to TS; I have never been able to get through and entire TS album from start to finish; I could not tell you the difference between any of her albums; I have heard the earworm Bad Blood b/c I have a teenager in my home; and other than that I really have no opinion about her music other than to say its not for me.

But I can say the exact same thing about Meshuggah (insert "Bleed" for "Bad Blood" to complete the analogy).

What I do know is that - I literally cannot escape her.
She's not easily ignored.
I can't even put on some sad bastard/indie rock album these days without her creeping into the discourse.

She's Turned into Orwell's Big Brother but blonde and covered in sparkles.

You have discourse about Swift when you listen to sad bastard indie music? I just listen to the sad bastard indie music…

Times I can recall Taylor showing up in my life:
1. Watching Chiefs games
2. Grammys (and thus friends reposting her album announcement)
3. Eras Tour

I don’t listen to podcasts or follow entertainment accounts (or Taylor).

Where the fack else is she showing up for you?

Also never saw Cats #blessed

I guess it’s just confusing to me that people get offended or upset when someone is injected into a news cycle. It’s so easy to just move along IMO.

I follow a few news accounts and almost always there’s a comment from someone that says “who cares?” That takes a lot of effort to inject your opinion on someone you dislike or are indifferent about.

I agree the people who say “who care’s” are ridiculous. And I know I can just scroll pass it; that’s exactly what I do. But it’s beyond annoying just how much I have to scroll pass. From TikTok’s to Reddit posts to Facebook suggestions she is everywhere. If there was an easy block button for topics this wouldn’t be an issue but I feel like the only Option to avoid seeing her name is to become a hermit; and even then I feel like they would find away to inform me of what she’s doing

Maybe that’s where I’ve become blissfully unaware as I deactivated my Twitter, TikTok, and Reddit. If I want to learn about anything I’ve got to seek it out. My Instagram feed is mostly memes tbh.

Radio (my GF likes to listen to the radio, every sixth song is a Swift tune and DJs love to wax poetic on her), politics (both her own advocacy and the ill-mannered takes of others), film (her concert film was a major media discussion, she is also in films albeit bad ones), concert touring discussion, discussion about other musicians and music, significant others forcing her into conversations on entirely unrelated topics, people who hate her forcing her into conversation on entirely unrelated topics, Spotify algorithms throwing her into playlists constantly, etc.

Like, I'm kind of envious of y'all who get to choose entirely what your world bubble looks like but some of us live with folks or interact with people or have Taylor participate in areas where that luxury doesn't exist.

Her music is always being used on TikToks, the golden globes, various music/vinyl reddits and Facebook groups I follow are constantly talking about her and just last week the political podcast I followed posted this episode

Because it's newsworthy that a bunch of broken brain people on the right want to take on the reigning biggest popstar over some weird conspiracy that she's a plant to help swing an election. Your issue lies not with Taylor Swift but with everyone's fascination with her.

I feel like I am probably the closest to an actual hermit around here and I am genuinely befuddled by the amount of people who are like I don’t understand where you guys are seeing Taylor. I see the news maybe once every six months and she’s even there. The entirety of my television consumption is cooking/food shows, home Reno shows and toddler shows. She’s everywhere.

You gotta mix things up, bro

My wife considers herself a swiftie, so maybe because I don’t fight it, I don’t consider myself to be impacted by it because it’s something that she enjoys (and her buying vinyl means I get off scot free when the boat load of my boxes arrive). I probably heard Folklore over 100 times during Covid. Still like it, which tells me it’s a good album.

I also try to ensure that I have my own bubble within the household bubble.

I think the actual thing is the right are genuinely scared because there’s a decent possibility from polling data that an endorsement from her could majorly influence the outcome.

Equally if that podcast came up in my feed and was an about say, FJM, I’d just mark it read and move on. Life’s too short to get frustrated about the fame of a famous person.

I’m also legitimately preparing myself for the real possibility that I will have to vote for her on the democratic ticket within the next 20 years. She polls way too well for that not to happen

It depends if she wants that aggravation in her life. It feels like it took the emergence of the tangerine fascist to make her utter anything even remotely political.
