Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

Which gets to my point is there really a backlash here?

No but equally I don’t think it’s an outlier to say that Midnights wasn’t a disastrous album and if an artist feels they are in a rich creative vein why should they stop? Shouldn’t they mine it and enjoy while they can? A creative block always happens soon or later.

This idea of fatigue of an artist you don’t like it’s vaguely comical and ridiculous to me, why do you care? I mean what would these people have been like in the 60s when there was a new album every 6 months.

I’m confused as to how I don’t like Midnights equates to I don’t like Taylor Swift. I bought the damn thing. You know what I don’t have in my collection? Any FJM, because I actually don’t like him.

This is why Swifties get jokingly called a cult, that’s an insufferable attitude… the exact same kind of shit you get annoyed at when people try to shove Pink Floyd down your throat.

Not for nothing, she should probably take a vacation, enjoy sometime away from it all. It can’t be great to be this constantly in the spotlight.

The first paragraph was to you and the idea someone should take a holiday after a well received album you don’t like.

The second is more about how frankly ridiculous the whole conversation around this today has been. It’s so easy to ignore stuff you don’t like in the 21st century, there is so much content. It’s not like people are stuck with broadcast tv and the radio anymore!

I forgot what thread I was in for a minute, but I think the biggest thing Swift has going for her is that she manages to make music for teen girls and their dads at the same time. It's the consumer double whammy.

Also, I think I tune out a lot of pop culture because I don't see her discussed that much or pop up other than in passing ads anywhere except here and the football headlines.

I disagree with you here, if anything I think it’s harder to avoid stuff now a days since everything is so interconnected. I personally avoid her the best I can she is unavoidable. Any conversation her fans can connect back to her. Hell look at the past football season where she was the center of attention, or even politics she is intertwined with. I wish I could blacklist celebrities so I would never have to hear about them again but being on the internet in any capacity you will see countless mentions of her

Literally my dad and two sisters have gotten really close by connecting over swift

Man I remember the 90s. If you hated a song you were stuck leaving the tv and radio off until it ran its course.

Maybe I’m just good at tuning out things I don’t want to pay attention to…

I think of that scene in The Bear where Richie is driving home after figuring shit out at the front of the house and he celebrates by jamming out to his Daughters Taylor Swift album.

I’ll have to disagree with you there as I’ve been able to avoid the entire post Oasis discography of Noel Gallagher.

And also the entire career of Miley Cyrus.

I think my IRL brain has some kind of protection circuits. As soon as the talk goes onto shit tv or music or whatever my ears go into selective hearing mode. If I’m on the Netflix or the Spotify their existence doesn’t offend me, I just scroll past them onto the thing I want.

Yeah, I don’t run with media that is inundated with Taylor Swift music. TBH, I hear the majority of her, Olivia Rodrigo, BTS, Billie Elish, Dua Lipa music in TV commercials. I don’t seek it out or listen to top 40 radio. None of my IRL friends care about pop music and I don’t spend much time around people younger than like 35 or children so my exposure is very limited. I am more likely to hear a Guided By Voices or Horsegirl song in my day-to-day life than I am ever likely to hear a Taylor Swift song.

Neither of them has ever been outside of the music/tabloid news cycle.

Taylor has dominated this year. Movies, check, the Bear, check, album sales, check, politics, check, football, check, sticking it to the man, check, plus all the tabloid circus from all of that and being you know Taylor Swift.

Imagine if Madonna had started dating Joe Montana at the height of her ubiquity.

At this stage in my life, I just find it easier on my mental state to just let so much go. There's a lot of media out there that I will never consume because I don't have the time.

Didn’t she date someone vaguely famous for playing the roid ball? And married a movie star. And if she had a single out it was on the radio and the tv and so was much harder to ignore because you didn’t have 1000+ channels of each and an unlimited repository of music and tv in your pocket?

Tabloid culture has always been shit so I’ve always ignored it.

That is great for her and her fans.

I guess it’s just confusing to me that people get offended or upset when someone is injected into a news cycle. It’s so easy to just move along IMO.

I follow a few news accounts and almost always there’s a comment from someone that says “who cares?” That takes a lot of effort to inject your opinion on someone you dislike or are indifferent about.

I'm going to chime in here but first some context: I do not listen to TS; I have never been able to get through and entire TS album from start to finish; I could not tell you the difference between any of her albums; I have heard the earworm Bad Blood b/c I have a teenager in my home; and other than that I really have no opinion about her music other than to say its not for me.

But I can say the exact same thing about Meshuggah (insert "Bleed" for "Bad Blood" to complete the analogy).

What I do know is that - I literally cannot escape her.
She's not easily ignored.
I can't even put on some sad bastard/indie rock album these days without her creeping into the discourse.

She's Turned into Orwell's Big Brother but blonde and covered in sparkles.
