  • Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers = Kenrick's In Utereo... in an era where Nirvana would have been too abrasive to go mainstream in the 1st place.
Saw James Murphy put on one of the two best DJ sets I've ever seen on Friday (the other being Jamie Xx). Was tipsy enough to try and score an autograph at which point he came over and shook my hand.

"You're the reason I listen to Bowie and Can. Thank you. Oh, and Coachella 2016 is one of the handful of best shows I've seen".

I think I may have lost him on that last bit. 😂😂😂
Saw Sunflower Bean tonight. Not only is their album one of the best of the year... They put on a STUPID good live show.
Anyone have a copy of Courtney Barnett's Sometimes I Sit that they aren't crazy about and would consider selling or trading?

One of my very favs of last decade, and I put a skip inducing hairline in mine last night by dropping it.

Let me know Duke. Right now I am weighing irresponsiblely dropping $40 on the OG orange via discogs (when I'm still filling out my apartment) versus snagging a black off someone here for half that.

Gonna think on it for a day or two and try and sell some stuff in between.

@DownIsTheNewUp i'll listen to tomorrow and maybe if i don't want it enough or decide id rather give it to you, i can give it for more around 20-30 (excluding shipping)
Just wanna say that those of you who recommended Reckless for a Chicago shop... good looking out. Selection was solid and pricing was straight outta 2014.

Picked up Grimes last album and the repress of The Bends (which shockingly had good reviews on discogs) for a cool 40 + tax. They said they could order shit for me too so I can avoid supporting Bezos and get some electronic in my life.
Just got the TT set back up with upgraded wiring.

What are the best record shops in Chicago guys? Esp for newer music ala Amoeba. Swung by Shuga and found myself enraged at the markups. That place is everything wrong with the hobby in 2022.

    Thank you @debar22!

Especially for Gramophone rec as I am definitely someone who likes electronic.

Agree that Reckless is probably the closest to our Amoeba. Pretty expansive selection. Ordered a few things from Dusty Groove early into the pandemic even though they're straight down my bus line, and they were great!

Surprised no one has mentioned Bucket o' Blood—bit of an off-kilter selection, trending heavy, but they're some of the best folks who'll even text you if you're trying to track down a release.

Recently ventured into Rattleback since we moved a bit north. Loved what I saw. Laurie's Planet of Sound is also in our hood and dependable.

If you ever find yourself down in Pilsen, e.g., at a Thalia Hall show, pop across the street to 606 Records. They prioritize indie labels and artists, and have a strong curation sense. (At least from what I recall pre-COVID.)
I've probably seen a couple hundred hip-hop shows in my life. Tyler the Creator's set at Day in Vegas on Sunday ranks pretty high among them.

And for the record: A Wu-Tang set circa 2010 Denver was easily the worst. Though Drake gave them a run for their $$$ at what I'm pretty sure was Coachella 2015.

Was my first time seeing him but the combination of his energy, the crowd's energy, the production design, his blunt wit and how on point his flow was made for a very striking show.

Also, his beats just have more punch to them live in the same way that RTJ's and Anderson Paak's do.

I saw him at a festival when Flower Boy came out. When he played Who Dat Boy, the crowd pretty much turned into a mosh pit. It was a crazy fun show

@DownIsTheNewUp RTJ as the headliner for shaky knees was hypnotic... i had 2 people next to me who were also clearly fans and we were all rapping the lyrics.. i actually tried to jump and mosh but i was disoriented and i wasn't near the front for the real stuff.. just trying made me feel awkward

Do Crosleys even play at 45rpm?

My Crosley knock off played 33, 45, AND 78 so take that elitists. Those reviews are legit hilarious though, I remember the first time using the wrong RPM on a Chvrches record and getting a huge laugh.

What's your guy's go to record cleaner? I've used a Spin Cleaner for years but it's time to upgrade to a vacuum based one.
The price that Azealia Bank's Broke With Expensive Taste is going for on Discogs makes it irrational for me not to sell... And yet I can't bring myself to do it because that album is integral to my life in the mid-10's and probably the most "golden ticket" purchase experience of my life.

Sell it then buy it again when it gets an inevitable repress/reissue

If it were an artist I trusted to repress it, that's exactly what I would do. But Banks is so crazy she can't even get through making her 2nd album without alienating whoever her producer of the moment is. And pretty sure she is on awful terms with the label and remains unsigned.

The fact that only 500 were pressed in the first place is kinda bonkers...
As somebody who makes what constitues a lower middle class living in the year 2021- and has seen them press a # of my all-time favorite album over the past year- I absolutely loathe that charging $40 a record seems to be a sustainable business model for Vinyl Me Please.

I used to drop $80 a month on 3 or 4 records via them. But apparently they only want to cater to the rich. Assholes.
Got a promotion that requires leaving LA for Chicago. Any tips or links for helping move my vinyl collection cross country?
I welcome all crtitics to the "Drake is bad pop for people who think they might like hip-hop" train I've been riding for over a decade.

Also, somebody call the fire department, that new Little Simz is scorching 🔥🔥🔥
    A. Kanye's new album is borderline unlistenable in places

    B. Anyone who thinks Kanye (or especially Drake) is a better rapper than Kendrick is living on a different planet than me 😂
Everyone talks about the West Coast v East Coast hip-hop divide that permeated the sounds of both scenes until very recently.

But nobody really mentions the fact that the East Coast is OBSESSED with Springsteen where as you can go an entire childhood (or three) without hearing more than a song or two of his while growing up in the West.

Not sure what the West Coast equivalent is though.

I grew up in suburban NY (80s/90s) and heard a ton of Springsteen, mainly because my mom was a big fan. My in-laws are from Michigan and know very little Springsteen. I was led to believe that their Springsteen was Bob Seger.

Growing up on the West Coast, the Beach Boys were part of the background and you’d hear their music everywhere, but, living in DC now, I’m shocked at how many people are unfamiliar with their music and have none of that nostalgia/reverence for them. East Coast people prefer slicker production and deeper lyrics and seem to avoid anything even slightly garage-y or with lyrics that might not be super deep or clear.

Kinda sounds like Michael Stanley to N Ohio/ W PA
Still absorbing but think I dig the new Modest Mouse. Haters probs gonna hate though cause it sounds like nothing else they've done before.

    Edit: Yeah, it's dope.
