Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

I mean rappers were talking about it in the 90s too but we can attribute it to some rape apologist rapper too I guess?

My point was that he has bars. And his stream of consciousness style raps are highly intelligent and delivered in a way that not many others in the game were doing it at the time.

Also, how is he a rape apologist??? I couldn’t find anything on ye olde interwebz indicating such.

Das Racist is one of my favorite rap groups of all time. Kool AD getting outed for being a trash person gutted me more than all the other musical me too moments of recent history
Same here man. Loved Das Racist. Kool AD is indeed a trash person and I was very sad to hear of it.

sadly the original comment was deleted i think? it was from his reddit ama

I love all the Stones talk the last few pages.

HOT TAKE: Goats Head Soup is the best Rolling Stones album of all time!

Caveat, I realize it is not objectively the best. But its my favorite :)
It more uneven The and less sweaty than Exile but I would definitely agree it’s a tad underrated as an album for sure!

Maybe that’s why I had made that connection. I remember hating it was I was a kid as it was a bit too mellow for me as a 10 year old.

I would say that "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" isn't even indicative of the rest of that first album but I don't know if that's true.

This is one of my favorite b-sides from the debut, which directly refers to Prince with the lyric...

"The Purple One makes a point, and I quote...
Sometimes it snows in April, sometimes you feel so bad for the love of peace"

I don’t really know which thread this question belongs, so I’ll just throw it out here: who was the first singer/group/whatever to perform using nothing but pre-recorded instruments? I probably didn’t phrase that well because I don’t have an extensive music vocabulary, but what I’m getting at is that you often see pop stars singing and there is music but no band playing that music. Who was the first singer to do that? I don’t even know how to begin researching that.

Thanks in advance!

Hmmmm.. I may just not know how to use reddit but I don’t see anything by Heems about being an apologist. The only part I read from him is:

if she would like to reach me on my tumblr and is interested in a conversation, i'll gladly talk to her. im glad she spoke out about feeling wronged i know thats tough to do.

This is the same assault incident that Kool AD copped too, correct? I only ever knew about him but nothing about Heems.

A OG/1st Press of this Album is on my “White Whales” list.

Hot take of the day: I couldn’t get into Blue Train. I love Favorite Things, Giant Steps, Ellington and Coltrane, and A Love Supreme, but dammit, Blue Train escapes me!

I love Pet Sounds....it is one of the albums that I own multiple copies of (stereo, mono, OOPs, REs, CD, box sets, outtakes). In general, I love post-surfer BB's (after The Beach Boys Today!) and have a soft spot for the surfer-era music, as my father used to play it when I was a child (although I don't buy it). I also wholeheartedly disagree that it hasn't stood the test of time. The instrumentation doesn't sound dated - usually music sounds dated when it utilizes very era-specific instrument sounds that are no longer in vogue (a lot of synth driven music may fall victim to that - one day heavily auto-tuned music will feel that way, I believe). It is all great playing and orchestration that is time-independent, IMO. As well, the lyrics are so universal in dealing with the anxiety of growing up and feeling out of place that they are not tied to a certain zeitgeist, social/political climate, etc.

However....I HATE the phrase - or ones of similar ilk - "you haven't listened to it" ("really" or otherwise). Or, you just don't understand it. This creates a false dilemma that assumes there is only a binary proposition (i.e. an exclusive either/or). Thus, it would look like this...Either you understand/have REALLY listened to X and love and appreciate it OR you don't understand it and that's why you don't like it. That a person could not possibly both understand what you love, just the same as you understand it, and still not love it themselves. Then again, people do the same with their POS children.

So, in closing, if you do not like Pet Sounds don't feel bad. I mean, you're stupid...but probably too stupid to feel bad about it. As you were.;)

I appreciated the thoughtful comments about Pet Sounds, and as it was a “hot take” thread my original comment was just that, figured it would start some conversation at least. F7FF1F0C-61D1-4AE3-AB6F-A20F8C1D218C.jpeg

Woke up this morning and decided to give it a go again with my first cup of Joe.

I totally get the innovation, and I don’t dislike the music. I feel like if I had been between the ages of 13-20 when it released, it would have a bigger meaning to me. The lyrical angst/anxiety is extremely relatable for sure.

I get the albums place in history, I just don’t think I’d put it in a top 20 list personally.

Bat Out of Hell is my Pet Sounds. The angst was turned up 100x, and it was a little more “charged” I’ll say, but in its own way it was different and innovative.

But I was the right age when it came out. It was relatable while being completely silly. I loved the theatrics of it all.
