The 812 is the amount of songs from the album he's played since it came out so... That's still maybe 60-80 spins depending on how many tracks it has.
They count tracks, not albums? That’s a weird system. So if I listen to say, The White Album once it’d be higher up than if I listen to say, Revolver twice. That’s wrong and weird and wrong!

It's why even though I played the Kanye-produced EPs more than anything else last year (Daytona, Ye, Kids See Ghosts), they only have 7 songs each so I'd have to play each one twice to equal a 14 track album.
AND the 812 is the number of songs he played FROM that album so he easily could have also played one of those songs 812 times.

That's still a lot of plays though... I've been using last.fm since 2005 (almost 15 years) and my top album only has 429 scrobbles.
I reject this system of scrobbles and damn it as the heathenous deception that it is...
My 47 scrobbles of Nicole Atkins mean I streamed her album 4 1/2 times (since Monday).

It's imperfect for sure, but it is a good representation of how much time you've spent with an album. Unless you know you listen to Whack World 50 times.

Also, the white album is a whole world of fun data wise. Spotify and Discogs can have naming variations that make things show up different. For instance, I've listened to Lizzo's album four times this week, but since twice it was the deluxe edition , it shows up as two different albums in my data. The white album shows up at least four different ways in my data.

Yeah I get that practicality but I don’t like the implication. It undermines the album as a form for me. But maybe I’m just an old grump and should get down with the kids and only listen to tracks...

That’s a hard no. Albums are an art form that should not and will not be disposed of. I come to JQBX for track driven sampling goodness, otherwise I almost strictly listen to albums. Especially for older albums it is practically imperative.

Big believer of albums. I do listen to the occasional playlist and I listen to a lot more singles than I used to (I blame @Plaid Room / Colemine for this)
The single is also an art form and I’m a big proponent of that too. I especially am a fan of non-album singles of pure nuggets that don’t necessarily work in an album. What I don’t like is the pulling of tracks off an album, or prioritising “tracks”, rather listening to an album as a whole. In fact let’s delete the skip button on Spotify, that’d teach em!

Skipping has always been a thing though, be it people jumping up to move the needle to the next band, cassette players that had auto search functions to find a blank spot to start back at, to it becoming easy with CDs. The record companies have pushed forth the single mentality with Now That’s Music Compilations and the restructuring of charts to account for streams. more and more recording artists seem to be building their greatest hits.
It’s also important to remember that the album has its origins in singles being collected.
It’s cyclical and as much as people want to cry out that the album is dying, there a lot of people making concept albums or still using the album to a potential instead of filler around bangers.
