Vinyl Me Please Rap & Hip Hop

Now that the second year of the RHH sub is done I thought I’d rank them. Would be interested in how others would rank them. I know a lot of people might think I’ve got Tical high and I get that it was already readily available but I reckon that’s a top ten all time hip hop record for me, and my third favourite Wu project after 36 Chambers and Supreme Clientele.

  1. Method Man - Tical
  2. Ivy Sole - Overgrown
  3. Handsome Boy Modelling School - So . . . How’s Your Girl?
  4. Denzel Curry - Taboo
  5. Saba - Care For Me
  6. Rico Nasty - Nasty
  7. OutKast - Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik
  8. Juvenile - 400 Degreez
  9. Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III
  10. TI - King
  11. Camp Lo - Uptown Saturday Night
  12. Knxledge - Hud Dreems

Damn, your music taste is so unpredictable!!! There’s no obvious kind of era/style of hip-hop you like! I love it!

From 94 through to about 2010 I'd say alternative and indie were the genres I predominantly listened to. That probably explains it to an extent, the hip hop I like is now either newer stuff like Vince Staples and A$AP Rocky or older stuff like Public Enemy or Wu Tang Clan. Not so much late 90s or 2000s.

we got some good stuff that could be coming

we now know its from def jam that came out in 2010

the big guesses rn are big boi (i dunno, could happen, but they did outkast just 3 months ago), the roots (probably the most likely, it seems like a fairly safe pick for VMP), or currensy (i would TOTALLY be down for this since its impossible to stream or buy on vinyl)

BUT it seems like those aren't it because storf said the top guesses for all 3 tracks had only 1 right. and U.F.O is pretty much it rn.... so my guess is distant relatives

But Storf said they will not be releasing any NaS albums due to his sexual assault behaviour/accusations. There’s no chance it will be Distant Relatives. Maybe it will be Love-King or R&HH have the correct guess. Distant Relatives won’t be as big as OutKast either (in my opinion).

is love king even considered hip hop.. its purely R&B

and then what is the essentials pick as U.F.O is the closest they got and the shaggs were nixed as well as implying the same for top drawer

This my ranking for the Rap & Hip-Hop ROTM’s.

ROTM picks 1 - 8 are all outstanding picks. The rest range from pretty good to just good/OK.

1. Handsome Boy Modelling School - So...How’s Your Girl?
2. Juvenile - 400 Degreez
3. Camp Lo - Uptown Saturday Night
4. OutKast - Southernplayalisticadilacmuzik
5. Lil’ Wayne - Tha Carter III
6. Method Man - Tical
7. Denzel Curry - TA13OO
8. Ivy Sole - Overgrown
9. Rico Nasty - Nasty
10. Knxwledge - Hud Dreems
11. T.I. - KING
12. Saba - Care For Me

Yeah, that’s the problem. Love-King is purely R&B with only a few rap features on the record. It wouldn’t make much sense for the R&HH pick to be Love-King. It’s just that Love-King could be considered a modern classic as an album. That’s why a lot of us think it could be Love-King!

Plus, The-Dream has been very active in the music world lately, working with Solange, Kanye West etc!

I believe Storf said one of them was right prior to me guessing U.F.O. The Reddit post with the guesses was edited after Storf posted that comment.

storf being storf again?

i'm hoping its not big boi.. not because i dislike the album, but we already got an outkast album.. its most likely the roots
Don’t worry about that Dukefan, that Big Boi album has a lot of avant-garde/experimental stuff going on. It’s like Aquemini-Stankonia OutKast era. So it will be completely different in sound from Southernplayalisticadilacmuzik.

You have artists like Janelle Monae, Vonnegutt and George Clinton and even Jamie Foxx on this Big Boi record. Very different to OutKast’s debut!

You got it ;)

Has anyone even tried making a substantial guess for Classics? Lol

We don't have enough to narrow down the possibilities, but I am thinking it will be a soul jazz title if storf indeed picked it as he claims.

So my top candidates at the moment are Brown Sugar by Freddie Roach, The Way I Feel by Big John Patton, and Prayer Meetin' by Jimmy Smith.

I want all those three! Getting them all three would be heaven!!! 💎😇

It's just such a weird pick for a Roots album, never comes up in a top 5. I never did get that Big Boi either even though I loved the For Your Sorrows single. Great George Clinton feature. I'll have to go back to see if I'd want the full album.
