Record Store Day 2022

Looking at Discogs, seems to me like a lot of places are tired of staring at the RSD titles in the bins and marking them down to just try and sell them months later.

Was able to get pretty much everything I wanted (besides JGB and Jazz Dispensary) for well under MSRP.

- both Ahmad Jamal’s for under $40 a piece
- Stark Reality for $30
- Augustus Pablo and Shabaka for $20 each

Lots of titles at low prices seems to me like shops would rather get them out soon, even at a small loss.

It was on the RSD BF UK list. I just grabbed one from Rough Trade UK. 10" release. Wish I could have found one in the US as you did. Like you, I have fond memories of seeing the band in New Orleans on their first tour.
Ugghhh, I should have posted about it yesterday. I saw that Spin Me Round in Easton, PA had it on their site (not under RSD releases) and just checked and it's still available. Can you cancel the UK order?

I love my local, but the Soul Coughing that's running $18.99-$20.99 in the U.S. was selling for $51.99 Canadian dollars 'round here. That does not compute by any maths I can think of!
They're using that Canadian money with the queen on it, once they switch to the king Charles notes the exchange rate will settle down

Yeah, I was hoping for it to hit the discount bins too. Now I need to decide if I $83 want this. I appreciate the find

Welp...Darkside over sold the Jazz Dispensary title, so I'm back to looking for that one... very frustrating because I could have just ordered that and Stark Reality separately from 2 shops and now JD seems to be sold out for MSRP on discogs at other US shops...

If anybody spots one in the US, please let me know! thanks!

Is me or does it increasingly feel like RSD has lost its lustre and should just stop? The releases are increasingly poor and there’s just less and less that isn’t worse takes of iconic songs or stuff that was long forgotten for a reason or something we all already own on colour vinyl.

It's still good for most stores, based on feedback from my local. It gets people in the doors. Each RSD, there are items people want and some questionable "filler" choice that don't sell well. Having a smaller number of quality exclusives pressed in sufficient numbers that allow stores to receive the number they order and everyone can get a copy could help reduce flipping and stress on the pressing plants. "Mile deep versus inch wide" as it were.

Has done for a while. The Black Friday RSD stuff is unnecessary. Prices this year have been pretty wild. £50 for The Cure picture disc!

Just checked, £75 for The Weeknd and £87 for Billie Eilish from Banquet.

I had no interest in going out on Friday morning, the list was very weak imo. A friend in Boston picked up two items that my husband wanted - Jerry Garcia and Steve Forbert.

I had to drive my daughter to the train on Fri afternoon, and my store is only 10 mins from there so I did pop in to see what was left. They still had Jerry as well as the Dead box sets (could have saved myself shipping costs from Boston) but I grabbed the Bing / Bowie 12" as well as The Doors Paris Blues. (and the Asia non RSD US release) I had pre-ordered the Cure since I don't want Wish as a pic disc.

I think RSD is still conceptually sound, but its focus that wasn’t super tight to begin with has gotten completely lost. I think if they want to successfully continue it, they need to establish a real intent and point of view rather than just “here’s a pile of stuff.” They let it get away from them - the labels want to wring every penny out of it and the RSD people took their hand of the wheel and let them.
