Fresh Grabs

August Fresh Grabs
I decided to take a page out of @Rip_City ‘s book and save up all my new purchases into one mega monthly post. I think this will better help me keep track of just how many records I am buying per month. August was a pretty healthy month…

First up the “New To Me” used releases…

Most of these were picked up from local records store outside the Billy Joe Shaver that was an eBay win and Ramsey Lewis, that was a generous PIF from @JohnnyCashFan .

McCoy Tyner - Expansions
Sonny Clark - My Conception
Clifford Brown And Max Roach - Study In Brown

Arrested Development and Clifford Brown were amazing PIFs sent my way by @Webb_615 and @Matt M respectively, thanks guys! The two Howe Gelb records, Hisser and AAAA, are RSD releases from this year that were still floating around at Zia Records online store for retail price. Tad I purchased on a whim from my local, Sub Pop does such a good job on these Deluxe editions it retails for around $20 and come in a nice tip-on jacket. Marah was an album I enjoyed a great deal back when it was initially released back in 2005 but hadn’t listened to in a while. I saw it was going for cheap on Discogs so I purchased a copy. This is my second copy since the first time Pop Market managed to send me a just the sleeve only. Nicolas Jaar is the 45rpm anniversary edition pressed on clear wax. It sounds great. Money Mark is an autograph test pressing that I picked up off the reissue label’s Bandcamp. The two Tone Poets reissued were ordered off of Amazon . Sonny Clark was ordered just yesterday for a whopping $13 thanks to a Promo coupon @CrazyDiamond84 shared on the Vinyl Deals thread and the ATLiens was graciously picked up for me by @Bloodlemons , Turns out the side D right channel surface noise is present on my copy but it is super faint and unless I am listening for it’s not distracting.

Here are my New Releases…
11B9BEFB-F045-4E30-9A76-321FE3D9A450.jpeg
Sierra Ferrell - Long Time Coming
Steve Gunn - Other You
Tobacco City - Tobacco City, USA

Sierra and Gunn were picked up locally and Tobacco City was something I ordered of Bandcamp after @mgp praised them in the New Music Thread. All of these albums are really great and worth a listen.

Lastly, some music related reading material…

@jfitzy posted a copy of From The Street Of Shaolin: The Wu Saga to the August Challenge thread and was looking for something new to read. I can’t wait to dig into this. The Rolling Stone book is actually 9 issues of Rolling Stone magazine from Sept ‘76 to Jan ‘77 hard bound together. I love old magazines so this is right up my alley. Probably my favorite cover in the book is this one of Brian Wilson…

Well, that all for this month, I am excited for some of the upcoming releases and look forward to showing em off in my September post.

Some record shopping in the UK! UK First pressing of Atom Heart Mother. A2/B2 RL cut of Houses of the Holy. Pecko Duck / Porky cut of Zeppelin IV. Early UK copy of Diamond Dogs.

And @Joe Mac I FINALLY found a good copy of Van Morrison - Tupelo Honey. All of these were found in Notts, of all places!

Awesome! That’s a great haul! Which store in Notts did you find them in!

Zeppelins and Bowie were from Rob's Records which is madness inside. Just floor to ceiling records, none very organized. pigeons kept wandering in since he had the door open and he kept chasing them out haha.

The others were from Big Apple Records. Tupelo was only £5. There are two shops in West End Arcade (Big Apple and 33 Records) which were decent.

Yeah I’ve been in Big Apple and 33 before both are decent if a little pricy for what I was looking for at that time. Rob’s is mayhem and was a little too busy just after Christmas for me to brave the madness, maybe next time 😂

I usually give Fopp, HMV and RT a little browse to see if they’ve a deal on anything new that I’m after too lol!

I also like to relive my misspent youth by visiting a few of the pubs in Hockley for pints and food too as I always get the train into Notts from Mansfield when I go!

Those are the types of places I have always found the best stuff, you might have to spend a 1/2 day diggin though. Did you have tea with him? Whenever I was in the Uk at a store they always offered me tea :giggle:

Im so glad you went here! Its amazing isn't it, utterly manic. He still uses a massive Record Price Guide book to price everything as well.

I have mentioned this before, but to the right of your photo you might have seen hints of another space? There is a staircase around the corner that leads to another room upstairs. Supposedly this is where the rare stuff is kept and is arranged neatly.....not sure when the last time anyone was actually able to get there was though!

Edit: Found a photo I took when I was there with the blocked up corridor to the left.

Which is exactly why with about 10 people in there (it was either Boxing Day or the 27th) I popped my head in and thought, nah, maybe next time 😂

I will never forget when I was digging in If Music is Soho when the owner, Jean-Claude, asked if he could pop out to get some food and leave me digging. He tried offering to get me a coffee and I declined, and when he got back he had bought some sandwiches in case I was hungry :ROFLMAO:

Very expensive shop but great customer service haha.

Where do you start? How many hours did you spend in there?
I was there for about 2.5 hours then had to leave. Could have been there all day. There was a "new arrivals" section just inside of the door so started there and went around. it's VERY loosely organized into genres + new arrivals. But I'd say more than half the stuff is underneath other boxes of vinyl.

Completely impossible to go in there. You can see through the window into that room from outside and it's just absolutely filled with junk. The OCD part of me wants to live here for a few months and try to somewhat organize the shop and clean it out hah. He mentioned pricing stuff from his books as well.

He's an interesting guy. Been buying and selling records for 40+ years and started as a northern soul DJ i think! I imagine he has some really rare stuff (if he can find it!)

Oh yea--there were 3 people in there shopping at one point and that was stressful. Can't move around in there at all. But he knew the names of everyone else shopping there which is pretty awesome.

Hahaha! I was actually talking to someone I know over there recently and he said that despite all the chaos he has a firm enough grasp in his head of what he has and where it is. If you ask him for say a stones record he can kinda go “I had one over there” and help you find it!

Also yeah stores like that always end up with a crew of regulars thats for sure!

Someone asked him if he had any Van Morrison and he instantly knew what he had in new arrivals. They had an OG of His Band and The Street Choir. His prices were not too awful to be honest. The shape of things was all over the place but a lot of the records were in better shape than I expected (sleeves were rough a lot though). Most expensive record I saw was an OG UK of Zeppelin III for £40. Almost everything else I saw was under £10.

Finally got George Harrison - All Things Must Pass on splatter vinyl. Credit (blame?) goes to @Joe Mac for recommending them. Tracking hasn't updated since it was shipped on the 20th of August.

Annoyingly, they shipped it in just the brown product box the album comes in which isn't designed for that so it got damaged in one corner. Time to see how The Record Hub's exchange policy is for buyers outside Ireland :(

I didn't make it to more shops in Soho but sadly didn't have time when I was in London. Really wanted to go to If Music. I went to SOTU and then Phonica I think. Picked up only new records there -- the Sault album I didn't have and Shades of Blue by Don Rendell/Ian Carr. I'll get there next time though!
