Needles & Grooves AotM /// Vol 26 -August 2021 /// TEENAGE FANCLUB “Grand Prix” 1995

Such a great album. Just ordered a copy of Northern Britain to add to my TF collection!
Yep...I almost went for Northern Britain as my pick..it’s an equally great record ...just pipped as Grand Prix came first and Northern ..is more of the same ..whereas Grand Prix was a massive leap forward from Thirteen

Another bit of Teenage vinyl arrived today in the shape of Man-made which I only had on those old fashioned CD things ...and also had the bonus 7inch inside which I didn’t expect as wasn’t advertised...so that’s nice
Just waiting on the last one to arrive and that’s a full vinyl studio albums set .
Doubt if I’ll ever find the best of on vinyl .....

The King ...enter Creation records

So I searched a little bit for this back in the 90’s..very hard to find...a few of the tracks are on Bandwagonesque era B sides ..so I gave up ..quite pleased when it turned up as a RSD release ...

But is it any good ....

..well no , not really ..here’s the band on it’s rationale...One night we all got completely wasted. ... and we said, "Let’s make a LP overnight. We’ll just improvise some songs and do some covers and cobble it all together", Norman Blake said in 2016.

Or is this the truth ..The album is often derided as a hastily assembled contractual obligation to US label Matador (allowing the group to sign to Geffen without penalty). However the group have denied this, claiming that the shambolic, spontaneous nature of the contents was a direct influence of producer Don Fleming, whose music was often improvised.

And it kinda sounds like it was cobbles together, but that maybe is it’s charm , the grunge version of Interstellar Overdrive is fun ...but well..mmm.. it’s a strange way to start off a new label era...typical Creation.

Grand Prix progress.

Oh dear it’s a terrible start , stalled on the grid ...and pushed back into the pits ...new sponsors Creation will be very disappointed with its investment on that showing ..school boy driving that...

Mansell verdict - still in F3 ..Sponsorship gained ..Creation ..need new tyres

1991- November - Bandwagonesque time

“She wears Denim wherever she goes
Says she’s gonna get some records by the Status Quo”

What a mega opening line ....certainly one of the greatest ever imo

And I love the mighty Quo 70-80 era so instant love

This one is when they get serious (but not too much) , Grunge pop cobain approved perfection...why I didn’t buy it on CD til 1995 who knows ...but I did bag a nice Pink reissue via HMV not too long ago

Anyways ..this is certainly worth buying if you ain’t not got it

Grand Prix Progress

And we’re off ....perfect start into bend 1..slight gear slip with Satan but from then on the perfect race..burnt up the competition...Creation finally got serious returns ..

Mansell verdict ...off to F2 we go

I picked up the cd for Catholic Education (long lost now) back in '90. Have been on the hunt for a vinyl copy for years but always out of my league price wise.

I think I also grabbed the Everything Flows 7in the same day or pretty close to it. Also got the God Knows ep soon after (Matador version)

Picked up the Free Again 7in (Alex Chilton cover) on the same day as I picked up Velvet Crush's Soul Crusher 7in (with a TFC cover on it)

Great pick @Gavaxeman

Didn't realize this was the pick (never did the N&G AotM before), but this is a coincidence since I watch Creation Stories last night.

I now have all of the fannies albums on vinyl except for the new one which I actually haven’t even heard

Welcome to the thread

So I’m gonna give Thirteen a spin this week ..and then in August will go thru Grand Prix track by track and gather listening thoughts and opinions and do discussion type things with those who’ve brought it this month ..and then might plod thru the rest of the catalogue thereafter. I’ve just received my copy of the new album too ...and I have all the rest too on vinyl but I really need to listen again to a couple of them again as anything released after Howdy! hasn’t stuck in the brain as much
