Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth (new AP Verve RE)gfgs.jpg

Coincidentally, the nickname for these two are The Blues (L) and The Abstract Truth (R). She's named The Blues 'cause she's old, black, and cool as hell. The Chihuahua is called The Abstract Truth because she took one entry-level philosophy class and now she thinks she's more cerebral than she really is.

Didn't make a post for vinyl additions in May, so I am combining those with last month's. Perhaps too much...again.

May + June Acquisitions

Ambient/Outer Sounds pickups:

Yoshi Wada - The Appointed Cloud
Tongue Depressor - In the Quarter Column
Beverly Glenn-Copeland - ...Keyboard Fantasies...

20210630_220144.jpg

RIP, Yoshi Wada. A very talented and creative musician in the field of avant garde, experimental, and sound installation works. Dearly missed.
Unfortunately, the Tongue Depressor selection is my least favorite so far in the Outer Sounds club so far. Fairly dull across the 31min runtime. I know it seems redundant to say that drone music is repetitive and dull, but this one lacked anything striking.
I see that a certain club has chosen a Beverly Glenn-Copeland album, yes? Well, they didn't pick the better album ;) Glad to see it was reissued yet again for the third time in about 5 years; this newest 2021 reissue is very well done/mastered.

N&G RotM (and related) pickups:

Calliope Musicals - Color/Sweat
Calliope Musicals - Time Owes You Nothing
Calliope Musicals - Wasted Space/Looking for the One Love [7"]

20210630_221113.jpg

The most recent N&G pick that I have enjoyed. Colorful, liberating psych pop. I have yet to explore some of the surrounding months of selections from year two of this club.

Jazz pickups:

Alice Coltrane - Lord of Lords
Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch!
Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach - Money Jungle
Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong - Ella and Louis
Dexter Gordon - Go!
Dexter Gordon - One Flight Up
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um

20210630_221843.jpg

Took a chance on the Zavvi box posted in the Online Vinyl Deals thread and I'm pleased at the quality I have heard from the few I have tried. Some arrived damaged, but the vinyl are all in good shape and they all came in polylined inners, much to my surprise!
Added another Alice record to the (meager) collection and hope to get a few more.
Also, this Tone Poet reissue of One Flight Up might be my favorite in the entire reissue line. Masterclass.

Current Year pickups:

Black Country, New Road - For the First Time
CHAI - WINK
Lost Girls - Menneskekollektivet
Squid - Bright Green Field
Jane Weaver - Flock
Evangelion Finally

20210630_223124.jpg

Four of my top5 of the year so far are shown above. Hoping to get Promises soon, 180g or not.
A bit disappointed with the track selection for the long-awaited Evangelion soundtrack reissue, but it's passable.

Miscellaneous pickups:

Aesop Rock - The Impossible Kid
Boldy James & The Alchemist - The Price of Tea in China
Kate Bush - The Sensual World
Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap
Deafheaven - New Bermuda
Deafheaven - Ordinary Corrupt Human Love

20210630_223625.jpg

This Kate Bush record goes for $30+ in many avenues, so I felt it appropriate to take it home with me for $23 when the opportunity arose in Portland.
Glad to have more Deafheaven, although I'm not digging where their sound is headed from the impressions of the upcoming release.

Fugazi - End Hits
PJ Harvey - Uh Huh Her
Hercules & Love Affair - Omnion
JPEGMAFIA - All my Heroes are Cornballs
Kero Kero Bonito - Swimming/The Open Road [7"]
Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia [UO exclusive]

20210630_224148.jpg

I believe I have all the Fugazi records I want, at last check.
I'm going Future Nostalgia variant hunting LOL. No idea why.

My Bloody Valentine - mbv
Talking Heads - Fear of Music
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Run the Jewels - II [TurntableLab exclusive]
Elliott Smith - Either/Or [Bandbox exclusive]

20210630_233748.jpg

Got the TTL variant from a member setting one aside for me; always thankful for the community's grace and compassion. Hopefully I can return the favor in some form or another (I have interacted with the PIF thread recently).
Can't say no to free record(s)! Funny enough, I sold my 2xLP edition of Either/Or to a local about two months ago, so maybe this Bandbox exclusive is a hint to think twice before offloading any Elliott Smith record?

A few in the mail, and a couple from the local. Looking forward to getting these cleaned and spun, but probably going to be until at least Sunday. Really good mix of tunes here!

Immanuel Wilkins - Omega
Yusef Lateef - Before Dawn
Floating Points and Pharoah Sanders - Promises
Sloan - B Sides Win Vol 2

Sonny Clark - Cool Struttin'
The Thrills - So Much For The City
Vincent Neil Emerson - s/t
Jimmy Smith - Back at the Chicken Shack

First time ordering from Turntable Lab and I'm very happy with the experience. Fantastic packaging and fast shipping, plus with the sales and extra 10% discount these were cheaper than anywhere else I've seen them. I had held off on a few and thought I'd already missed out on them so was pleasantly surprised when I saw them on TTL.

Okkervil River: A Dream in The Dark - Two Decades of Okkervil River Live (4 LP)
mum: Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK (20th Anniversary Edition, 3 LP)
Widespread Panic: Montreal 97 (6LP)
Spiritualized: Fucked Up Inside

Nice pick ups. You got a notepad too, right? That’s always my favorite part.

What?! I didn't know about any notepads...

I didn't get one last time, and I'm still a little grumpy about it.
Bummer! I haven’t ordered from them in a while hopefully they just have some supply chain issues and didn’t discontinue them, I may have to go actually buy stationary now, since I am WFH I can’t swipe any from my office either.

Does Turntable Lab still have that awful return policy? Kept me from using them for years. Like, they wouldn't accept returns or replacements due to warps, and had a ridiculous "How to remove warps" page, if I remember correctly.

I risked the knee and back pain at my local record store so I could dig through the discount crates below the shelves. Everything was new except for Crosses and Wild Swans. Crosses was a good score because it's getting more and more expensive and that Wild Swans is really high in price it seems. Also I always wanted that Hey Mercedes album and it was also listed for about 30 bucks and here I came back about a year or so later and find it for 18. Same thing with that Bear Vs. Shark comp. 12 bucks.

Great find on the Hey Mercedes. I was a big Braid fan back in the day, need to listen to this again.
