Just noticed on cogs that someone already paid $150 for Folsom Prison. Is it possible to "fake" a cogs transaction where you basically sell something to yourself in order to artificially inflate prices?
With two different accounts/addresses, sure. There's also buyers clubs where they collude to raise prices of certain items. So sending it to your friend and paying the discogs fee is a small price to pay to get the aftermarket price at 5-6x retail.

moral of the story, assume everything over msrp is shilled, if you’d still be happy with it knowing that then there’s no reason not to pull the trigger. Buy what you like at the price you want to pay for it, but if you’re “investing” in vinyl, you’re likely to get burned. There are buyers clubs popping up that control the secondary price.

It’s my tin foil hat theory that Vinceron and VMP are heads of the same buyers club and many VMP releases are shilled on the secondary in order to geurilla market being a member of the club. “$40 is a lot of money to be asking to be part of a club, so let’s mess with the secondary to make it seem like a bargain!”

So for those awaiting for any of those VMP restocks: Pauly mentioned that no restocks happening today, and you will be notified by SMS and email BEFORE* any drops happen. Also update your waitlist items but that fills me with immense doubt.



*Actual proof they can pull this off successfully needed.
 
They've just built in the cost of shipping. I wish it was more transparent, but buyers are more likely to buy if they don't see costs added after the fact. It's pretty simple marketing psychology. And, for sure, it allows them to price creep.

As for the higher prices...for VMP and records in general, I have just been buying less. Curate, not accumulate.
I have a huge stack of stuff I need to sell. Lots of VMP FOMO things among them. I want to post them here first, for you fine people, then I'll try my hand at discogs for the collectible ones. Everything else will get me some credit at the local shop I suppose.

Does your local actually pay well? The few in my city offer pennies on the dollar. I find it easier to just sell on Discogs or online. That way I'm not getting $2 for a $25 record.
 
I wish Darkside's Psychic Live was pressed as an exclusive, oh well.

My issue with VMP pricing is that there is no way I'm shelling out that cheese for a record if two conditions aren't met: 1) confirmation of pressing quality, and 2) I absolutely love the album. This pretty much eliminates any purchases of preorders because I'm waiting to hear the whole album for condition 2 to be met, and by the time I wait to get input on quality, most things are sold out. So, given this reality, I'm not re-upping my grandfathered pricing when it runs out. I had a nice run, and Throw Back Thursdays back in the day were certainly a highlight, but VMP and I are moving in different directions.
 
I’ve been spending a lot recently but not nearly as much with VMP. I pretty much ignore all of their exclusives, and only get ROTMs that I really love. The price increases (on subscriptions and exclusives) forced me to. And I’m thankful for it honestly. I’ve been filling the holes in my collection with stuff I love and will listen to often, instead of grabbing stuff from VMP I never needed or even truly wanted.

No idea... I figured I'd take them the stuff that is either a little more beat up or sells new for cheap ($20-ish) anyway.

I think- and this is just my opinion as a collector, I'm not in the industry- that we are seeing a confluence of market forces at play here of which VMP is just a part/symptom of:

1) Likely driven by shoe culture, the pop and hip hop heads are SPIKING the market on FOMO releases. This is where a lot of the buy groups, bots, and flippers come in to play. Records in these genres seem to be commanding the most absurd markups, last the shortest, and ironically are probably enjoyed the least as a lot of fans really treat these as collector items.

2) Pressing quality and sound engineering matter to buyers now likely more than ever. In the 70s you got what you got, in the 80s/90s people just went for CD's, in the 2000's buyers put up with Rainbo/United digital pressed crap LP's. But now...there is just so much more of an uproar over bad sound, and the Bellmans/Greys/RKS's of the world are working overtime and their name alone can push units. The extra attention to detail likely costs more and leads to-

3) We are quietly running out. The Universal fires, the pressing plant disaster has not only made preorders a 6 month out process, but I've noticed more and more items in my DC prices floating higher and higher. Things aren't getting repressed as much. Harder to find used copies of past presses- and speaking of Grey/Bellman? They have been doing this a LONG time, and will eventually stop. The amount of AAA sources for them to remaster is drying up, the major disposable income market for the vintage jazz/classic rock genres are getting older and have amassed most of their collections. There isn't really anything set up to fill the void these guys will leave- some of the definitive recordings of major albums have been pressed and may never come back.

Mine usually will do around 50-60% of what it's going for on discogs and a little wiggle room if it's in the form of credit instead of cash.

That being said, VMP pricing is still way more than it needs to be right now, but if they aren't hemorrhaging customers they'll have no incentive to fix that.

And this is also why crypto has been so hot? Can’t owe China a bunch of money if we destroy our own currency and favor crypto as the new standard.
