Vinyl Me Please Essentials

eh i guess when i first heard the term "dance punk" i expected techno meets hardcore punk.. like something that was heavy and lyrically about protest and power mixed with great dance beats and a colorful synthpop sound.. instead i got what was basically if talking heads had more synths
I mean I think you are right that the punk part of dance punk is maybe more from post punk, but I don't think I've ever heard LCD Soundsystem described without mentioning dance. I don't see how anyone would say that a genre that uses dance in its name isn't dance music though, right? EDM it is not obviously.

Talking Heads use a lot of african rhythms and afrobeat influence which certainly has its roots in dance, but I don't think most people would describe them as dance music like they would Blue Monday and forward New Order or LCD Soundsystem. I guess I wouldn't argue if someone said some of their stuff was dance rock though.

I'm not arguing that anything isn't post punk, but saying the absolute that LCDS isn't dance I think is a very hard position to defend. Tons of much less dancy post punk bands (including synths) as well, but even then, hard to argue something isn't dance when it is music. Maybe easier with some This Heat?

Or maybe I should have said that if my wife (not an IDM/EDM expert) said "play that dance song that I love" she would probably mean Temptation or Dance Yrself Clean and if I said "that's not dance, that's post punk," she would roll her eyes and tell me to let her enjoy it and stop being a music snob/nerd, as I emulated so well in my above post. 🤣

but thats dance music only in the way that LCD soundsystem is.. its basically just post punk with synths... and its part of a specific older scene thats faded out and doesn't have as much influence on modern electronic

Being part of the older scene, I would say the problem was and is now to an even greater degree all the labelling & sub labelling of genres. I'd be interested on what you see as good examples of modern electronic & modern dance music?

I have a limited experience of new dance & electronic as I haven't been clubbing every weekend (or very much at all) for many many years, but everything I have heard, good or bad doesn't really sound that new.

ok... i sent a DM about it so i dont clog this up too much

i kinda just consider cut copy (or what i heard of them) more electronic adjacent rock music than anything

🍻 You'd have to dance yourself clean to think otherwise.

So I just finished listening to Kid Cudi, and I thought it sounded great. I was on the fence with this one, but I’m really glad I ended up getting it.

I did notice a few pops here and there, but it was a rare occurrence and will probably be sorted out with a good cleaning. Very happy overall.
