Heavyweight records tend to last longer only because they are more durable and resist breakage better. (Note I said breakage not wrapping)I have a lot of real floppy light-weight records from the 70s/80s and a lot of them sound incredible and have lasted this long! As @djdavedk said, the grooves wear, not the thickness of the record.
