January 2021 Challenge Thread - It's All One Song! And One Raffle!

Day 05: “Old enough now to change your name”
Play something by someone who uses a stage name.
Clifford Joseph Harris, Jr. - King

Clifford is from the streets of Westside Bankhead Zone 1 in Atlanta. His original stage name, T.I.P., it stems from hischildhood nickname "Tip", given by his grandfather. He later changed it to T.I. out of respect for label mate Q-Tip.

Day 4: “He Sleeps with Angels (too soon)” – Play something by someone no longer with us.

Amy Winehouse - Back to BlackView attachment 82672

The first time I heard Amy was on the radio on my way to work back when I lived in San Diego the first time. The veteran DJ announced the song--the first time the station was playing it--with praise for her talent and concern for her decision to eschew rehab. The song was obviously "Rehab," and I wonder if that DJ still thinks of his words the first time he played her record on the radio.

Somehow I'm thinking that would be Halloran from his time on 91x or 94.9?

Day 6 - "L.A., uptight, city in the smog"

Day 6: “L.A., Uptight, City in the Smog” – Play something recorded in or references Los Angeles in some way.

Going with just another band from East L.A. First saw them open for the Grateful Dead in '88, most recently on a double bill with X a few years ago.

Since I needed to catch up, I decided to distract myself from the insanity going on out there by trying to find 3 albums that meet all 3 of the days at the same time, so here goes...

J Dilla - Donuts
R.I.P., birth name James Yancey, recorded in L.A.

Elliott Smith - Figure 8
R.I.P., birth name Steven Paul Smith, recorded in and references L.A., including the song "L.A."

The Roots - Game Theory
R.I.P. Malik B (former member featured on a couple songs on this album), several members with stage names, like Questlove and Black Thought, recorded in L.A. (among other places)

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

From what I understand, this album was recorded in several different studios across the L.A. area. Brian Wilson wanted certain things recorded in certain studios in order to achieve a specific sound. The entire recording process is quite fascinating. Brian is a true genius and visionary.

Yep. 94.9. That's how I remember it at least, c though I think things were shaking up at the time, so it's possible it was someone else, but no one I remember, so oh well.

Death Cab For Cutie - The Photo Album
Song: “Why You’d Want To Live Here”

2A02134C-372A-447F-A3E7-6EFDB65AF6F0.jpeg

“I’m in Los Angeles today / It smells like an airport runway / Jet fuel stenches in the cabin / And lights flickering at random / I’m in Los Angeles today / Garbage cans comprise the medians / Of freeways always creeping / Even when the population’s sleeping / And I can’t see why you’d want to live here.”

If anyone wants to get a head start on Day 19, or wants to double up on that, I'll bend the rules and allow it!
Day 6 (& 19) — LA (& protest)

Kendrick Lamar — To Pimp A Butterfly

Between “Alright,” “Wesley’s Theory,” and “Institutionalized,” felt today was an appropriate day to spin one of the most important rap albums of the last 20 years.
