The Blue Note Thread

How much actual meat is there to that Uncompromising Expression book? Don mentioned it in the AMA, but I haven't been able to find out just how much actual history or musician interviews or whatever else is in there besides just pictures. Pictures are nice, but I want to really get the nitty, gritty details.

How good is the Blue Note Records Biography by Richard Cook? I want to pull the trigger on it, but reviewers on Amazon seem to say that it doesnt give the whole story and some parts are inaccurate.
I tend to use the Uncompromising Expression as an extended liner notes when listening to a Blue Note album that features in the book, rather than reading cover to cover. For example I picked up Ornette Coleman Trio - At The Golden Circle Stockholm (Vol. 1) the other week and during the second play-through read the section of the book (think it was around 4 pages) that specifically reviews that album. Saying that, there is a meaty intro which features on how the label was set up (although once you have read a couple books/articles on Blue Note this tends to be a repeat without too much extra info). The photos really make this book worth having, as theres lots of 'behind the scene' photos, session photos, location photos etc.

The Biography is good and was the first Blue Note specific book I read so there was a steep information/learning curve. It is pretty heavy at times, I found myself stopping to listen to the album a particular section was referring to as its written with the assumption you know the music inside and out. I actually watched a Blue Note biopic a few weeks before reading the book and remember feeling like there were bits of the film that the book missed (and vise versa to be fair to it). If you can get it cheap I would recommend it. I bought all the books mentioned way under RRP by just checking eBay every now and again. The Uncompromising Expression is probably the most expensive of the set (Amazon has it at £35) but I managed to pick it up new on eBay for £15 inc postage.

Just seen this on ebay and had to share with you guys/girls.

This is just open to fraudulent acts right? People are now selling replica first press stickers (presumably with the intention of people applying it to reissues). Im really hoping this doesn't become a trend otherwise we might start seeing fake records popping up.

I saw this a while back and figured is was just for people that wanted to replace old ones or ones that fell off.

I'm actually listening to the Joe Henderson release right now and I'm honestly not struck by it really. The solos are kind of interesting but they seem to quickly devolve into the sort of soloing I get bored of, random note movements up and down the scale. I love the idea of a trio with bass, drums, and sax so I'm going to give this a listen a few more times before I really pass hard judgement but so far my initial reaction is just eh.

Best Tone Poet by far is the Chick Corea in my opinion, although I'm pretty biased toward piano-featured stuff anyway.

So, big stuff I got from the Don Was AMA. There might be something cool coming along in regards to Money Jungle, the Tone Poet 2020 calendar is almost finalized, and Joe is working on 2021 as well. Also, according to Don, the anthology alternatives were 1) The Amazing Bud Powell vol. 2 instead of Horace Silver, 2) Roll Call by Hank Mobley instead of Dexter's Calling, 3) Lee Morgan's the Procrastinator instead of Schizophrenia, 4) Big John Patton's Got a Good Thing Going instead of Lou Donaldson, 5)Eddie Henderson's Heritage instead of Hutcherson, and 6) Robert Glasper's In My Element instead of Ambrose. The reason I bring up the alternatives is I believe that Storf said they might look into releasing exclusives of the alternatives and I would love a good pressing of Roll Call or the Procrastinator without having to spend buco dolores.

I can't wait to keep spending all my money on Tone Poet pressings until the day I die.

Some of the best albums I’ve ever fallen for started off with this exact situation. But something keeps bringing you back, and back, and back until it clicks and becomes one of your favorites.

Not saying it will happen the Joe Henderson Tone Poet, but don’t give up on it. It’s a real cooker if you give it the dedication it deserves.

Original Japanese pressings of some Grant Green albums up for sale on EBay for decent prices. Here’s Matador: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/382990692367
Ok
It might be a bit "route one" but I love Inner Urge, been meaning to save some cash to get the SRX pressing. And an upcoming Tone Poet release, Andrew Hill's Black Fire is another cracker featuring Henderson.

Joe Henderson - Multiple (Milestone) should be listened to. One of the highlights of his run of albums on Milestone.

Anyone want to help decipher this message I just got from Carol at Music Matters about a replacement!?? She said they were out of replacements and would offer a refund and paid return label, so naturally I pointed out the title was still in stock. This was her response...

"Yes, Artie, but replacement discs are not the same entity as the full album. We have a certain amount of records repressed full production and then a certain amount of replacement discs. I'm sorry, we are out of the latter. I will send you the pre-paid label tomorrow."

I'm guessing the issue was something with the actual vinyl itself, which means they wanted to just send you a new record on it's own and their records reserved for just replacement of a record have been exhausted? What title is it?

Their customer service is THE WORST!

Ya warped Herbie's Empyrean Isles, but why refund the $75, when I could just buy another at the same price from them?

It doesn't make much sense. This makes me extremely hesitant and unlikely to take the plunge on the whole srx series like I was considering doing after testing some of the back catalog.
