The Blue Note Thread

I see a few people were bidding on that same All Seeing Eye on Ebay. I was, too! Along with a Japanese Speak No Evil from the same seller. Lost both auctions! Busy cooking dinner like an idiot when the auctions were ending.

Sadly, the only 80th release was Face to Face, but I also took photos of some albums of artists we have discussed in detail here. As well as part of the list of the 100 "other" albums you should listen to. Which has some familiar names I think y'all might recognize. I apologize for the long post.IMG_4609.JPGIMG_4610.JPGIMG_4612.JPGIMG_4614.JPGIMG_4615.JPGIMG_4616.JPGIMG_4617.JPGIMG_4618.JPGIMG_4619.JPGIMG_4620.JPG

Sorry if I missed it, what’s the name of this book? I need to get this.

I've pretty much decided at this point to pre-order any Tone Poet popping up on Amazon as they all seem to drop to around $27 at some point in the pre-order period (though I have Cornbread locked in at $22) Today I listened to Baby Face Willette for the first time, damn is that a good album! Looking forward to it for sure.
Just came here to post about Baby Face Willette dropping to $27 and some change!
Ben Ratliff had a great write up on this album in his "100 most important recordings book," made me rethink purchasing this. I can post the write up when I get home but I like how it approached the idea of organ focused jazz in general

I pre-ordered yesterday when it dropped. Have been streaming and it’s just brilliant...have now managed to pick up the Tone Poet versions of Shorter (Etc), Baby Face Willette (Face to Face), Dexter Gordon (Clubhouse) and Lee Morgan (Cornbread) for under $28 each. The last three are pre-orders, shipping later this month.

I passed on the VMP anthology, and instead opted to assemble my own Blue Note Tone Poet anthology. It’s available to anyone...just choose the 6 albums you want, then select 2 more. 8 audiophile gatefolds for under $230, not sold out and free of drama. Game changer.

But you're missing out on the exclusive community where the masterclass in jazz is going on.

No worries! Just realized I never said the actual name of the book. It is the New York Times Essential Library Series: A Critics Guide to the 100 Most Important Recordings, written by Ben Ratliff. Who I believe did the booklet for the Miles Davis/John Coltrane classic

You definitely need Joe Henderson and Chick Corea and Sam Rivers! 😀

Speaking of Joe Henderson, any recommendations aside the Tone Poet release?

If I may make a non-blue note recommendation, the Elements with Alice Coltrane is one of my ALL time favorite records. Jazz Dispensary did a reissue recently that sounds great and I would highly recommend.

I like all three of those, but am trying to pace myself and limit purchases to the ones I truly want/need in my collection. But who the hell knows, will probably end up buying most if not all of them when all is said and done!

It might be a bit "route one" but I love Inner Urge, been meaning to save some cash to get the SRX pressing. And an upcoming Tone Poet release, Andrew Hill's Black Fire is another cracker featuring Henderson.

New York Times Essential Library Series: A Critics Guide to the 100 Most Important Recordings

Thanks for posting this, I read through the reviews on the pages you posted and went and bought a copy of the book as a result. I love books like that so looking forward to it. I usually use the 'Blue Note: Uncompromising Expression' which is pretty good as well, although the one you posted seems to be a more thorough review of the albums.

Seeing as im on the topic, have Blue Note books been discussed on here at any point? I've read quite a few jazz books which touch on Blue Note, and also some specific biographies of the label which have been good. If anyone is interested the ones that come to mind are:
Blue Note: Uncompromising Expression (2014) - A coffee table book with fantastic photos, history, reviews, anecdotes etc.
Blue Note Records: The Biography - Richard Cook (2004) - A thorough history of the label, with detailed reference to specific albums.
The Cover Art of Blue Note Records Vol.1 & Vol.2 (1991 & 1997) - More focus on the artwork, with a handful of essays throughout the books.

There's a few that touch on Blue Note but arent specifically written to highlight the label. For example:
As serious as your life - Val Wilmer (1977) - Jazz in general but Blue Note is mentioned quite a few times (not one to read if you want specific Blue Note information).
Miles: The Autobiography -Miles Davis & Quincy Troupe - Again, this only touched on Blue Note in relation to the albums Miles recorded for the label.

The book I really want to get my hands on (but I cant seem to find it anywhere for a reasonable price here in the UK) is Blue Note Records by Frederick Cohen. Im sure most of you are familiar with it, its a guide for identifying original presses and generally gets fantastic reviews online.

How much actual meat is there to that Uncompromising Expression book? Don mentioned it in the AMA, but I haven't been able to find out just how much actual history or musician interviews or whatever else is in there besides just pictures. Pictures are nice, but I want to really get the nitty, gritty details.

How good is the Blue Note Records Biography by Richard Cook? I want to pull the trigger on it, but reviewers on Amazon seem to say that it doesnt give the whole story and some parts are inaccurate.
