Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

In terms of colored vinyl it's twofold for me when it comes to why I go for it. The collector in me likes the rarity for sure, and they're fun to look at and pull out of the sleeve but also it's the practicality of knowing that all this money I'm putting into these records will be protected SLIGHTLY more if the vinyl I'm buying is actually a desired commodity. Records are too expensive, but if I pick the right ones at least they will keep their relative value or in some cases actually appreciate in value. It means when I look at my collection and the amount of money I've spent on it, it's not sunk cost... It's actually an investment in some cases. And I feel better about that.

Now that being said I would never buy a coloured press when there's a better quality black pressing available for the same basic price. The quality of the master is still the top of my list.

And in terms of collecting, my desire to get into vinyl actually started only about five years ago when I stayed at an AIrbnb in Old Quebec City. It was a loft in a old tabacco factory and the owner had very nice taste in... things... In the rental unit he had a hard drive based digital system that was running through a pair of Sonos Faber Olympica II speakers. In the RENTAL unit, I'd love to know what his home system was. These things were $14,000 for the pair. It took me about two days to figure out how to use the system because of how the harddrive was setup but once I got it going I listened to Nirvana Unplugged and Dark Side Of The Moon in high res digital and it honestly brought a tear to my eye. And when I left there I knew I had to upgrade my system to get to that point because it was the most incredible listening experience I'd ever heard. And like many others I was sick of the disposable digital world and wanted to get back to the actual tangible aspect of music and collecting. The "art" of it I suppose. So six years later here I am and I can safely say I've now surpassed the sound that system was putting out and that makes me GIDDY everytime I pick something out to put on my deck.

TLDR: I LIKE NICE THINGS

I am on a similar page as you in general, but the problem with this sort of rationalizing it as an investment is that it ignores the chance that the vinyl collector market demand falls in the future. Or perhaps the uncertainty of the timing of that fall, which seems inevitable eventually.

Not in my case, I'm not using it as an investment. I have actual investments for that, I'm just protecting myself as much as I can by getting limited pressings because if anything will hold any value when the entire thing crashes, CAUSE IT'S GUNNA CRASH, it might be them. But I have no intention of ever selling them so it's fine either way really.

Like I said, it's not my main reason for going limited, but it makes me feel a little better about myself for spending all this money.

Yeah and I'm on the same page with you there. But, you did say "it's actually an investment" so I thought it was worth pointing it out, since I expected you to in your post but didn't see it.

Yes, that's why I said "in some cases" immediately afterwards. Let me hereby state that if anyone on here is using their money to buy vinyl as an actual investment plan this is an impossibly bad idea.

Yeah, this is a callback to the days when they curated records from labels/bands for which VMP had no responsibility with anything other than taking orders and delivery. Now Again just gave them 100 of each.

The individual albums are $1 cheaper elsewhere, so overall less expensive with VMP if you have a membership (free shipping). *HOWEVER*, if you want all of them, then the $100 box set is a much better way to go.

If you have been to one of DC's shows, or you went back in the day like I did (saw them 5 times in this era), then it's worth it.

PLUS, full-band performances of songs that are not anywhere else. The songs from So Impossible take on a new life with a full-band.
 
if you are a super fan of ayalew mesfin just buy the boxset on rappcats for 100 bucks and save about 20 bucks.. if you dont want the box set you can probably be safe with VMP IF you are a member

Me neither TBH. I remember seeing it on MTV2 when it initially aired and thinking it was a neat moment l, I also enjoy when in some live performances the crowd will sing a portion of a song but the Unplugged the audience sang along pretty much the entire performance. I am sure it was great communal bit of fun for those that attended his live shows but it’s not what I am looking for in a live album. Obviously to each their own though I am sure it will be fun nostalgia for some.

Yeah this is what I'm like with that Eilish Live at TMR. It's a fun little LP and she does a great stripped down job on it and the direct to acetate actually sounds really good, but the 20 or so girls singing over every song gets... grating. The one girl who screams "COME ON!" during every song is kinda my hero for just not giving a fuck but also I hate her so much.
