Television

My better half is searching for a user interface that creates playlists from different streaming sources. For example, a Tuesday playlist would play the next episode of Will & Grace from Amazon then the next episode of blah blah blah from Hulu etc then the next episode of something from Netflix and so on. Any ideas?
That’s a good one. I would enjoy that feature. Don’t say it too loud, Alexa will overhear and Bezos will steal it.

Some thoughts on TV I've been watching or am geared up to watch...

I mentioned that I was rewatching Seasons 1/2 of Better Call Saul and then finally getting around to watching 3 & 4 (will have to wait till 5 lands on Netflix). I was worried that since I had seen seasons 1/2 that I'd find it boring to rewatch. I mean, I've rewatched through series but it's usually comedies. I've probably seen every episode of Seinfeld over the years a dozen times and gone through The Office a couple of times. But I find it easy with sitcoms because even if I know what's going to happen, I'll still get a chuckle. Dramas, for me, often rest on the tension of the unknown/the outcome. Luckily, as it's been a few years since I'd seen season 2 of BCS, it felt fresh again. Even the parts I did remember still had a freshness. I was happy to finally get resolution for what happened at the end of S02 w/ Jimmy and Chuck during S03. Also, the ending of S04 I really enjoyed; in so much that I think Kim finally saw the bottomed-out baseness of Jimmy/Saul with his brother's letter thing.

I also mentioned HBO Max the other week. I ended up signing up for it and they give you access to HBO Now beforehand. I'm watching The Midnight Gospel at a trickle (episode here and there - really good show; very interesting concept; can get very heady so I think it works good at a trickle) on Netflix, but for the most part have turned my attention to HBO. Although I have put Dead To Me on my watch list. I've heard enough people say good things about it here that I think I'll give it a go.

I am currently watch Barry. I've wanted to watch it since I heard Bill Hader on an NPR interview. Fantastic show. The entire ensemble is great. Much respect to Bill Hader as a powerhouse creator. He is another example of how comedians can tap into emotions and put forth some fantastic dramatic performances (much like Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Bob Odenkirk - those are just a few off the top of my head). I already loved him (and Kristen Wiig) in Skeleton Twins, and Barry continues to show his creative range. A couple other notables: Henry Winkler is great; Paula Newsome (Janice) I really liked. But probably my favorite - Anthony Carrigan as NoHo Hank. I'd only ever seen him in Gotham (a good performance in an okay show), and I think he is great in Barry.

Other items on my HBO watch list that I've always wanted to watch or heard good things about on here:

Chernobyl
Deadwood
Downton Abbey
Game of Thrones (really, I've watched all but the last season - but I think when I do watch it I'm just gonna rewatch the whole series now that I have unfettered access)
His Dark Materials
Sharp Objects
Silicon Valley
Succession
True Blood (I watched the first couple of seasons years ago, so I figure I'll give it a whirl)
True Detective (I watched the first season and loved it - I heard mixed things about S02 and better things about 3)
Veep (excited about this - can't go wrong with Julia Louis-Dreyfus)
Watchmen
Westworld
Six Feet Under
Barry has one of the best written/greatest wtf episodes in all of tv. The feral girl episode. Have you gotten there yet?

True blood just gets progressively more terrible with each season. If you've watched the first few, you really aren't missing much after that.

Veep is excellent. Excellent. So is Sucession. Those would be the 2 I'd start with

Do not waste your time on True Detective S2. Just skip to S3. S2 is abyssmal.

I notice that one of the better series from hbo, the wire, is not on your list. Have you already seen it? If not, you should give it a shot.

Six Feet Under is my wife's all-time favorite show

Oh, I also think I'll add Entourage onto the list. But I'll probably watch it if I have nothing else. I had a buddy who loved it.

However, there has always been something about Jeremy Piven that I find unsavory. I don't know what it is - just a feeling. Same sort of feeling I get about Tom Cruise.

That is definitely a show you should watch only if nothing else is available. Lol. Jeremy pivens is the best part. And i feel gross even saying that.

Definitely give Curb Your Enthusiasm a try too. One of the best comedies ever.

Just watched it. It is S02E05. Really good episode. Both the characters of Ronny and Lily are really good. When Fuches yells "What are you?!!!" at her, it had me rolling.
I watched that episode multiple times in a row. The first time i was in a state of "wtf". The second time was so i could actually absorb what was going on. So good.

I think Downton Abbey the movie is available temporarily on HBO but the show isn’t. I think the show is on Amazon Prime though.

The Leftovers was another great show with a solid finale.

This is a quite a list. There are some great things here. Silicon Valley pairs well with Veep and Barry if you want a nice comedy night. I think you should give Season 2 of True Detectives a go, While it is certainly the weakest of the 3 seasons it still has interesting veins worth exploring. TBH if they somehow could rewrite the season and eliminate the Vince Vaughn portion of the story line it would probably improve the show exponentially. Succession is on of my favorite shows on TV but you need to prepare your expectations as it takes about half the first season to really get rolling, I also immensely enjoyed Watchmen it was really well done. Deadwood is one of my favorite shows of all time. I would also like to say you should give Leftovers a shot. it is another all-time great show that is bonkers in the best ways and gets better as it leans into the weird. Also, it wraps up in one of the most fulfilling ways you could ever want.

Still super down about Hana Kimura's death. Watching Terrace House with friends was one of the few bright spots of the last few months, and I fear that it's tainted for me irreparably. RIP, lonely person.

You’ve been watching.
But is it good?

I saw its marker being advertised and I gave watching it a thought. I don’t really have much nostalgia for She Ra (although I watched He-Man).

Is it good as its own thing (ie not banking on viewer nostalgia)?

When it was announced the wife (@MsLoganHenney) and I commented on it. She’s into animation so she may like it.
She loves the reboot of Voltron and (she’ll correct me if I’m wrong) I believe one thing she liked was its more adult tone.
I don't recall She Ra growing up. I did watch He Man though.

This reboot is actually delightful. I am mostly watching it because my nieces LOVE it. I like to watch what they do so that I can chat with them. It's very empowering and diverse. I think it is teaching kids some cool lessons - be true to yourself, different kinds of people are so very ok, etc. The theme song is super cool - 80s power ballad-esque. Each time she turns into She Ra, I pump my fist in the air.

Is it the best thing I've ever seen? No. Is it fun and perfect for getting lost in while the world outside my door burns to the ground? Yes

That’s cool that you mention your nieces. I’m pretty sure Voltron has that appeal for the wife cause she could talk with her nephew about it (but I could be misremembering).

At the very least I’m gonna watch an episode to hear some of this music!

I know their parents are doing an amazing job of raising them to be kind and accepting of others and themselves. I just sometimes like to dip in to make sure ALL of the diversity is covered. They get princess-falling-in-love-with-another-princess books from me, that kind of thing. My bro-in-law is actually the one that watches this with them on weekend mornings - he let's my sister sleep in. He texted me one morning while watching and I was skeptical of it. He told me to look up the writer and to give it a shot. It's cool. She Ra and Princess Glimmer (SHUT UP! THAT'S HER NAME!) are BFFs and go to the Princess Prom together. Which is something I wish I knew was ok when I was growing up - going with a friend. Bow may perhaps be transgendered but I'm not entirely sure. But also, that is why the show is cool. No one "comes out" because they shouldn't have to. They just are. Stuff like that.

I've also watched all 3 Descendants movies - solely because of my nieces. Yeah, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Finished all of Parks and Rec. It has been so helpful in making me feel good, seriously. But now I'm sad it's over. We're now doing Community from the beginning. But...I think I'm also going to just start Parks and Rec over again on my own. I miss it already and I love it so much. It's so warm and funny and hopeful. I bought the complete series just a minute ago so I can get all those extended episodes that I don't think are on Netflix. So yeah, it's crazy maybe to rewatch an entire series right after you finished it, but hey, whatever makes you happy, right?

It is my ultimate comfort show. I've watched it 7 or 8 times through (except S1, I always skip it). I agree so much - it is funny and hopeful. People tell me to watch The Office and I've tried a few times. It just has a different vibe. PnR is about friendship and supporting the ones you love and living your true life. The Office seems more mean. I just want happy. Andy and April being silly crazy in love. Donna living her best life. Ben and his adorable nerd obsessions. Chris's unshakeable positivity. Leslie and Ann's friendship. It is all the best.
