World Music thread

I'm in total agreement with him. Virtually every time I play one of the 160+ releases I have of them I think of one or more of the songs - why hasn't this been on a compilation? BTW, I thought I had the top 7" but looks like I've only got Volume 2. The test pressing below is one single I've been seeking for a long time...

I feel bad for you, you probably went down the best/worst rabbit hole! They seem to have an endless discography.

Ha! You're half right. The good part of it though is that it pays to be patient as there are so many releases that sooner or later you'll be able to pick up a release you haven't got for a good price, even now with all I've got (eg I've got 5 singles on my Ebay watch list currently). I've got pretty much everything I've bought well below the prevailing Ebay/Discogs price. I'm similar to @Selaws - go for the better records, and less good covers.

More great reissues on their way. Syllart is perhaps the greatest of Senegal's record labels and there seems to be a reissue campaign beginning next month. They're releasing Gestu de Dakar first (a band i hadn't previously heard but which sounds amazing) and finally Ismael Lo. In between, they're releasing one of my top 3 African albums - Mohammadou Bamba by Orchestre Baobab. Anybody even somewhat interested in African music should check it out - one of my favourite covers, plus awesome music.

They will have some og but not really into that. Mostly reissues
On the African side, in order with newest first, the ones I'd recommend would be: the new Shina Williams, Ebo Taylor Jr, Ebo Taylor, Pat Thomas and Marijata, Marijata and more Ebo Taylor. I'm not the expert on Brazil but love the Arthur Verocai record.

Good for you. It means that you'll have more records to buy :)

He is your specialist when it comes to African music. On another side, their last Japanese Jazz reissues were very good too. Last April in Paris they were selling their records super cheap (roughly 15€) and they're super friendly. Ask them what you should buy and they will tell you.

Here is a good start for you @Dtknuckles, you can't go wrong with these records and there is a bit of everything: African and Brazlian music, Funk, Japanese jazz and even a Belgian band playing Latin music :)

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley - Simigwa
Rob - Rob (Funky Rob Way)
Cymande - Promised Heights
Tenorio Jr. - Embalo
Arthur Verocai Arthur Verocai
Hareton Salvanini – S.P 73
Ebo Taylor - Twer Nyame
Incredible Bongo Band - Bongo Rock
Nico Gomez - Ritual
Minoru Muraoka - Bamboo
Power Of Zeus - The Gospel According To Zeus
Salvador Trio - Tristeza

Another good thing is to buy Mr Bongo Record Club Volume One, Two and Three :)

Good luck! Bring cash, not your credit card.

I feel this would be a great place to post this!

I would like to introduce you all to Kelvin Declined. They were an alternative rock/post-grunge band from South Africa. In the late 90s/early 2000s, South Africa had an explosion of alternative rock groups. Out of this movement came the band Seether (originally called Saron Gas), who reached international success soon after being discovered by an American label. Kelvin Declined was actually on a few compilations with Saron Gas/Seether.

Kelvin Declined's music has been an enigma, with only a few tracks being available on YouTube and other sites. Notably, the music video for their song 42 (which supposedly received airplay on MTV's South African channel) is on YouTube.

In 2002, Kelvin Declined's debut, self titled album was released. It has never been reissued on any physical or digital format, and, as far as I know, is not available online anywhere.

Until now.

After my brother introduced me to 42 on YouTube, I had to have this full album. I had to hear the rest. So, me and my brother tracked down rare copies of the original CD of the album, ordering them directly from South Africa. Since getting my copy over a year ago, I can now say it is my favorite album of 2002. My brother finally got around to creating a YouTube video of the entire album. So here it is, for all of you. Available for the first time ever outside of South Africa.

Kelvin Declined - Kelvin Declined (2002)

Timestamps for each song are in the comments. If there is any interest in a download (MP3, FLAC, whatever you want) of the album, message me and I'll make sure it gets to you. Thank you for reading and, more importantly, for listening.
